Which cans should i attempt to soak?

#1

Post by herrenfam »

My husband and I did out first oxalic acid soak on four test cans yesterday. We used one cup of acid to four gallons of water and checked them every hour, then let them soak overnight. We were not overwhelmed by the results. I'd post a before and after picture, but our before pictures aren't the best for clarity. Basically, they went from red rust to can-colored spots on the cans. Yes, we did use our worst dumper cans. But I guess we were expecting more repair results.

That brings me to our question: what is the ideal can to try and soak to recover it and make it more displayable? Is it a can with a light surface coat of rust, one that has pimples of rust, or a dumper with no real salvation? Also, did we use the right ratio of acid to hot water?

Thanks!

30's and 40's cans clean better than 50's cans as The Paint was heavier...I have SMOKED 50's cans in the acid..Your mixture is exactly what I use so,,that is correct..It is a CRAP SHOOT..Some will clean great, some will just NOT..Keep trying...

Thanks for the reply. We will try again with older cans. One of the cans was older, but it turned yellow in the acid. Reading the forum, I know that means it soaked too long in the acid (it was about 19 hours total).

We are in nevada, but we used cans that were acquired in Kansas. We used a Budweiser a Schmitz, a strohs, and a mostly unidentifiable cone top.

Nevada cans alot of times seem to be sandblasted by the sand removing the paint & sun burnt to toast if exposed to surface. These types of cans never will clean good. Unless dug underground or in a pit I don't think Nevada or any desert can has much hope. LEON.
