Before I jump right in trying to clean this and mess up this cool can......is it rust or oxidation in the ALE? am I correct in thinking oxidation is not really fixable? more like it's taken the place of the paint as opposed to covering it? any help is appreciated :smt030

Yup, what Jody said. Often seen with metallic finishes like that.

A couple small spots of it is rust & will clean up but 90% is Humidity or Moisture spotting & not much you can do to fix that. LEON.

You might want to try 3M Pro Formula Cleaner Wax. You can find it at a Car Quest or a better auto part store (one that sells the automotive paints for autobody shops). It's about $10-12.

It's a cross between regular wax (which won't remove grime) and the more harsh rubbing/polishing compound (which can scratch if your not careful). Follow the directions, and test on lesser value metalic cans first. I've had some luck with it on reducing drabness of humidity spotting, but don't expect miracles. Once humidity spotting takes hold, there will always be some blemish (metalic shine is gone) even if you use rubbing compound. This 3M stuff just reduces how much it stands out. At the very least, the stuff will make the rest of the silver metalic paint detail gleam like a new silver bar.

Good luck.

Or it could rub the paint off on the sensative rust under the paint area an make it worse.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of, I may give the cleaner wax a shot...even marginally better sounds good.
