Magic Marker removal????????????

Postby BeerMe on April 22nd, 2010, 1:51 pm

Has anyone found anything that will remove magic marker from a beer can without destroying the paint in the process? Why some idiot wrote in the can in the first place is beyond me.... :smt012

Oh, one warning - if it's on a lid with gold coloring, it will take the gold off. If it's on a label or on a regular silver lid, you should be fine.

Is the maker on the paint or the bottom. I have one with an X maker right on the brand name. Will you let us know how the acetone works? thanks

Good that you can't find it yet.

One caution: it may take off any metalic paint as well. Don't try it on a red Grain Belt Cone top. It'll smear the colors in about 3-4 seconds!! I learned the hard way..

I have used rubbing alcohol and a rag on the lids to remove prices in magic marker. Not sure what it would do on the paint.

Found it. Just a white Schlitz flat, but otherwise nice condition. Tried the acetone and it had no affect. Perhaps it is something other than majic marker. Maybe soaking in acetone for a few minutes might work? I am pretty sure I tried rubbing alc before. Not a big deal, but I occaissionally see a can that has been marked up so it would be nice to find something that doea work.

Maybe some kid playing or some adult that couldn't find any paper to write one so "grab a beer can".

BeerMe,
I've also had success with gasoline. But, please be safe. Gloves, outside, no smoking, etc.

Let us know how it works on that marker...

Acetone is just as dangerous if not worse. Gloves, well ventilated area preferably outside, face mask, absolutely no sparks or flame! Some substanses you also have to be careful of rag disposal since fumes can build up in places like closed garbage cans. Don't use around kids or pets! Or wife!

Soaking in Acetone for a few minutes will definitely take off the magic market--- and all the can's paint as well. If it doesn't come off in 1/2 second, it's not coming off. Don't push it further as extended exposure will eat the can's paint. Good to test on the backside first.

Does this apply to trays as well? I recently acquired a nice old Jax tray except that someone drew some leaves on it in marker. I'd like to remove that if I can do it safely without damaging the tray.

Acetone had no affect on my marked up can. I am presently looking for a product by Mr. Clean that is supposed to work. We will see.
