Re: OD CANS
So what are the easiest can(s) of the OD variety to acquire?
I realize that some would say none are easy, but in relative terms, which ones can be acquired more easily than others?

Re: OD CANS
In the east, you see a lot of Ballantines, nearly all of which are rolled. You also see a fair number of Schaefers, including dumpers. You don't see many others.

Re: OD CANS
We can start talking about variations, too. For example, the Goebel comes as an others pending can and a 3-patents can. Pretty sure there are quite a few others that come both ways ...

Re: Olive Drab Discussion Thread
I've heard the story that back in the 70's an antique deal in El Paso, TX received a shipment of antiques from England. To fill in dead space in the shipping container and prevent shifting, CASES of OD cans were used. The story was told by El Paso Rick who at the time had just started collecting cans and didn't have much money. He got a call from the antique deal who said if you can get to my store in 15 minutes you can have all these cans you want for something like $5.00 each. All Rick could raise was $10.00 so he bought 2 cans. The OD's were Lucky, Schaefer, Pfeiffer and I've heard a few Ballantines. To substantiate the story even further, I was looking though some late 70's World Wide Beer Can Collectors Club want ads recently and saw one from a collector in El Paso selling Lucky, Schaefer and Pfeiffer OD cans. This answers the question as to which OD cans are the easist to find.

Re: Olive Drab Discussion Thread
There is an error on the composite list. The composite shows the Fox Deluxe from Chicago as "NL." It should be 1-064-40-0 using the new BCCA numbering system or simply 64-40 the old way.

I agree with idigrust - that's an IRTP can that is pretty much colorless. It had color when it was new.

I had thougt that too, but all the one's listed in the USBC have a gold band with a red stripe around the top. In that place on the one I have it has "Internal Revenue Tax Paid" around the top where the gold/red stripe band should be.

Re: Olive Drab Discussion Thread
There are quite a few Bud ODs out there, but like the 007 cans they are very desirable. They go for pretty good cash.

Re: Olive Drab Discussion Thread
The Bud ODs always seem to have condition issues. I'd love to find one in the same condition as most 007s out there!

Re: Olive Drab Discussion Thread
Getting back in and reviewing all the activity here in the Composites forum since my "leave of absence." This is an older post but I'll seek to clarify: your Grain Belt is a perfect example of a label with a couple vulnerable colors. These are found in the upper Midwest with regularity and the red was often the first color to go - they used a metallic type ink for the red parts and it didn't hold up like an enamel might have. The gold, when not completely rusted over, tends to tarnish to a very even "OD" appearance. The appearance of yours is typical of how this label often appears after being cleaned in oxalic acid.o'sstrohs&nattybohs wrote:I had thougt that too, but all the one's listed in the USBC have a gold band with a red stripe around the top. In that place on the one I have it has "Internal Revenue Tax Paid" around the top where the gold/red stripe band should be.
For another example of just how deceptive gold dulling can be, I'd refer to the hi-pro Altes cones (IRTP, from both Detroit and San Diego). There was an indoor find of the Detroit cans years ago, some of which can occasionally be seen with very even and complete dulling of the metallic gold. Even the Michigan specialists questioned their provenance for a time, but as alluded to in a previous post, the dead giveaway is that they're IRTP cans. There are some true OD flattops with so-called "Disregard" lids that amended the Withdrawn Free Of Internal Revenue Tax For Exportation statement to "Internal Revenue Tax Paid," ostensibly for retail sale in the USA, but to my knowledge ALL true olive drabs originally had the WF statement lithographed into the can design itself.

Can anyone confirm to me that the Ballantine OD comes in both a 2 patents and 3 patents variety. I have one variety but need to know in order to update my Ballantine composite list.
Thanks
