Composite Ideas For Anybody Interested

#1

Post by Wheaton »

We're off to a good start here and I want to thank all the contributors once again.

I've talked to a number of you since getting this started and there are some specialty lists that I believe are still works in progress. The following have either been discussed or are under construction:

- US Gallons
- 7 and 8 ounce cans (may even see specialty breakdowns for the large brand groups, like Country Club and Goebel)
- J spouts
- Chicago cans
- Colorado cans
- New Jersey cans
- C. Bacon's updated quart composite by state, and including can construction variations

Please take this opportunity to present new ideas for specialty lists you'd like to see. Even if you don't have the resources to develop them yourself, your ideas might spur others to work up new material. I'd personally like to see a 14oz composite with minor variations included. They are largely overlooked, but still constitute a sizable group with well over 100 different cans.

Some years back, Randy Karasek put a lot of time, miles, money and effort into a great online reference for Michigan cans. If you haven't yet seen it, I can re-post a link. That's about the only reason nobody is actively attacking MI - excellent resource material is already available online.

However, I have thought about making a MI spreadsheet with help from other current/former MI specialists. Even with Randy's work available, I feel an accessible spreadsheet would still be of value here. It would give folks a common location for adding variations, pictures, and information. So although it's not actively being worked up, I wouldn't preclude a MI composite in the future.

The CO list is 95% done, just waiting for some consultation with the Coors. I've been thinking of Bob Fondren and his zip collection. That might be a very popular composite.

Reading some posts over in general discussion about the Schmidt City Club in a Pacific Can Co. can. There's another interesting composite possibility... labels from Pacific Can Co. I wonder if anyone has a collection of said cans?

This is a great and valuable section of the website. Great job so far. About the only interest in cans I have are long opener OI's. I'd like to see a list of all these!
Currently in a collecting funk. Waiting for the bug to bite again to get back into collecting some type of cans, on a small, affordable level.

I have just finished the complete composite of cans from the P. Ballantine & Sons Brewing Company, Newark, NJ. What's next in having the composite posted on the web site?
It's in Excell.

What is the saying "Lets see pictures or it didn't happen"?

Anyone taking the first step of doing the work to put together an Excel spreadsheet, if you are interested in taking the next step of a "pictorial composite", give me a PM and I am willing to help set you up. I can import your Excel data into CanDB and automatically provide the framework, data, and generated web pages. Next step, and could be a long journey of small milestones (digital you can release a little or a lot) is to take pictures to show the variation specifics. Work yes, rewarding when complete, very much so...

Putting together the information and pictures is the real work. Web hosting the content is honestly very easy (not much more than drag/drop from your computer to website).

Next step with an Excel spreadsheet is to send a copy to either Dave Wheaton or myself. Our e-mail addresses are in the Composite philosophy topic. We'll give it the once over to make sure everything works as advertised. Shortly thereafter it'll be submitted to Dan B. and set up in the forum.
