Help to identify this Crowntainer

#1

Post by sgramling »

The book shows 3 Boston Light Crowntainers.
The first one, if I'm not mistaken, is the "one known" that came with an ex-employees collection. The other two have clear cross-hatching over most of the can.

This dumper has no trace of the cross-hatching. Is this an example of the aforementioned one known? Or is this another variation that is known but has missed the book?

I can't tell from the picture, but does that crowntainer have paint on the cone like picture # 3 as it appears to me?

The cone is almost completely rust, but the paint line is pretty clear so it's not #3. Looking more closely at my BL crowntainer #2, the cross-hatching is brown, not black. The red on it has faded to only a ghost in a few spots and completely away in most. If this heavy brown cross-hatching also faded, it faded utterly without a trace. Probably more likely than finding a can that was probably never filled. Click the photo to enlarge. Thanks for the help!

I have dug a few of these with the cross-hatch pattern. It was easy to see on all the dumpers I took home when cleaned and most right out of the ground. Has your can been cleaned? How does the front look? Can you post a front label pic? On the photos you've posted I see no hint of any pattern. Cool. Steve

Very cool can, I don't see a trace of the crosshatch either.

I would give that bad boy a good cleaning and see if you can see any of the brown crosshatch after.

The first one is gold or copper, presumably in an attempt to make it look like the J-Spout. The color is muted in the USBC photo.

I can't say if this was cleaned since I must have received it in a group of cans and don't know it's origin. I haven't dipped a can in Oxalic since the late 70s so I'd be afraid of going near acid with this thing. These pics do show the possibility of there being a copper colored paint that is still there in spots (if that's not just rust shadows) and the fact that the red words LIGHT faded and left white while surrounded by the brownish color suggests also that there was once a darker color around the word and that both were printed over a lighter colored primer with the red fading more completely. I guess this could be what I hoped but it's far from conclusive. Here's 3 sides - no sign of cross-hatching. Click to Enlarge.

Looking at the book and also the dumper that I have, I believe that you have the second can, 192-16.

The colors should be red, black, brown on a cream/white base. Your red has faded. Brown does not fade away, like red, so it appears that this can never received the brown paint for the cross hatching.

An interesting error can, maybe there are more out there like it. My two cents, Billy.
