is this a good idea? does it affect the value of the can or just personal preference?

Very bad idea, can is worth more all original. I won't consider buying any cans with any type of touch-up.

There are many cones out there that have had their spouts repainted. I'm not talking about just slapping gold paint on the cones. Some people have developed a great technique and you would be surprised how hard they are to identify.

I don't like repainted cones, but it won't stop me from buying a cone top if I need it. I also hate rusty cones on the shelf as I think they distract from the can label, especially if they are in good colorful condition. So I buff out rusty spouts using a wire wheel on a bench mounted grinder. The wire wheel allows an even distribution of the buffing technique and limits possible damage from what a stone grinding wheel would do. Since it is mounted and secure the possibility of slippage is reduced, and I also cover the can label with an aluminum cover to minimize any paint damage. It also allows me to get the rust off the rims and makes the can look better on display.

Now Conehead doesn't like it, and compares the technique to putting "lipstick on a pig" but when lined up on the shelf it definitely makes a difference. I might make a video of my technique if I ever get around to it.
