Toleware Can, They're not always winners
I bought this toleware cone top at this year's Spring Thaw. It was found in Canada, but from the size I knew it was a US cone.
It's always exciting stripping the paint to see what you get. Unfortunately they aren't always tough cans.
Good thing is, it turned out really nice. Maybe the next one will be a tougher can.

I would say it still a winner! Better than brake fluid or a can of Heet.

Re: Toleware Can, They're not always winners
I used acetone.
Fill cone with extremely hot water, let the can warm up. Then submerge the can up to the cone in acetone. Within a few minutes the paint should just fall right off. Don't brush the can when the paint comes off. The beer label will also be fragile. Use a toothpick to pick off the remaining spots of paint. You may have to dip the can a couple of times. Once in a while you get one that the top coat won't come off but most will.
Here's another I did a while back.

Re: Toleware Can, They're not always winners
Conehead, if the can in question has a decal do you try to remove the decal before you soak or do you leave it on & if you do leave it on does it effect the removal process? Would the decal get in the way of the acetone working properly? LEON.

Re: Toleware Can, They're not always winners
Leon,
I've never had a problem with the decals. They tend to come off pretty decent. You might have to quickly redip for the paint underneath.

Wouldn't a redip for the paint unerneath decal soften up the now exposed factory paint, that has already had it's repaint removed? LEON.

Re: Toleware Can, They're not always winners
Yep, that's why you don't want to brush anything. Just use the toothpick on the remaining toleware paint. You also have to be careful with possible paint fading on the redips. Usually the redips are quick. Just dip the can in for 15 to 20 seconds. The paint is already soft just still adhering to the under layer. You just want the paint soft enough to "let go". The factory paint does seam to have a better adhesion than the toleware paint. I have never had a problem with it sliding off.Leon wrote:Wouldn't a redip for the paint unerneath decal soften up the now exposed factory paint, that has already had it's repaint removed? LEON.

Re: Toleware Can, They're not always winners
I've had the soft repaint layer pick off but take the underlying factory paint with it because both layers were soft. LEON.

Yea, I have had some issues with soft paint as well. Just like with everything. The more experience you get with something, the better you are able to handle the problems you encounter.

Re: Toleware Can, They're not always winners
How in the world did my super secret method of taking off overpaints get found out? I've been doing this for years, just as Jim describes. The difference in temperatures between a hot can and cold acetone causes the outside paint to flake right off. I have never had a problem with multiple soakings in the acetone as the factory paint is a much harder baked on laminate. I have also guided Mr Menke and Mr Gordon in this process to remove shellac from a large group of cans they bought. We modified the method slightly and just watched the shellac flake off. Works on smoke damaged cans also.
What will it not work on? High quality Oil paints or high quality enamels such as were used by Wout Arentzen when he repainted cans back in the early 80's. Also, cans that have rusted under the factory paint such as Fishing bobber's made out of cans. It will also not work on beer cans that are overpainted with a different label as the overpaint was also baked on. Get your rubbing compound out for those.
Of the 25 or 26 I have done only three were ever ruined, a pre-rusted Northern dumper that Mr.Sheppard spray painted over to pass it off as an overpaint, a Duquesne cone that had been a fishing bobber and was rusted under the factory paint, and a 16 oz flat that was given to me by a trusted friend to take the overpaint off, and there wasn't anything under the paint.

Re: Toleware Can, They're not always winners
Years ago I bought a group of cans on eBay with very old shellac. The cans were pretty yellowed and the shellac itself was flaking off in spots. I never thought of this method--sounds easy and it sounds like it should work on those cans. THANKS for the tip!!

I found this at the flea market this morning. I'm gonna try Candog's super secret method. Anyone else have any tips? What's the most likely can underneath? I can see a little dark green paint at the back top near the seam. Thanks, Steve

Could be a Beverwyck Beer or a Krueger Ale. Croft has a black stripe between the green and the seam, Old India has a red stripe.
Can't be a Dawson. Good luck!
