State tax lids

#1

Post by Wheaton »

I was just re-reading the thread on everybody's B/G pickups, including my own post which involved state tax lids and vanity lids. I was needing a new "thing" in this hobby so I'm starting to save them casually.

I'm wondering about the complete list of states that used them. Here's what comes to mind:

Alabama
Florida
Georgia
Kansas
Kentucky
Maryland
Michigan
Mississippi
North Carolina
Ohio
Pennsylvania
South Carolina
Virginia

Anybody know which ones I'm missing here?

Utah has nice tax lids.

Here's an example:

http://www.breweriana.com/14-flat-tops- ... s.tpl.html

I think it's a great idea for a specialty...you should figure out a way to display them sideways so the lids show.

Utah! How could I forget that one? And Oklahoma...I guess I've seen lids stamped "OKLAHOMA," but did they ever say anything other than the state name?

Bob, that Storz lid is uber cool...

Bill B and Shawn M had some interesting ideas for displaying cans plus lids, like maybe an inclined shelf of some sort where all lids are visible. I might be able to have fun with this for awhile.

West Virginia used tax lids (and bottoms) from 1950 to 1980.
Here are some typical designs (they are actually can bottoms but the lids are similar only not on tin free steel)

If you add Iowa, Oklahoma, Utah and West Virginia to your list, that is all I know of. All of these have already been mentioned. I have never seen a Louisiana. Please post a picture if you have one. I have seen several Drewry's Old Stock Ale tabs with Iowa tax stamps.
To follow up on Dan's posting, I am putting together a list of cans with Virginia tax stamps. Who is willing to take on the other states? (Ted, you should start a list for West Virginia. I know you have a lot of cans with West Virginia tax stamps.)

This is turning into a neat thread. As I look around for these cans, I'll try to keep notes on the more offbeat stuff and see if I can make a contribution to the tax lid project.

So from what I'm reading here, the full list includes 17 known states:

Alabama
Florida
Georgia
Iowa
Kansas
Kentucky
Maryland
Michigan
Mississippi
North Carolina
Ohio
Oklahoma
Pennsylvania
South Carolina
Virginia
West Virginia
Utah

...and possibly Louisiana. I've never seen one before, either, but I'm not very experienced with tax lids so my recollections don't count for much.

Slightly off topic, but when I get home tonight I'll try to get a better picture of a Walter's flat (Colorado) I picked up that has a neat vanity lid. A couple CO guys said they'd never seen it before, so I thought it might be of interest.

Here's that Walter's flat. Not a tax lid per se, but maybe the Colorado guys will get a kick out of it. Dee L was in a dealing mood on Saturday afternoon so I scooped this up along with a few others.

Add Minnesota. I am 100% sure I had a Hamm's can once that had it. So to confirm there is a photo on page 39 of the Bible.

Still looking for the Louisiana that I questioned. Maybe had it confused with another state that shows the outline of the state.

There was an article sometime back about tax lids or someone that collected tax lids. BCCA or ABA magazine?

It's cool that Walter's vanity lid is B/O. We've dumped those cans and I have a black outline Sheridan on the shelf with the same lid. That's about as close as you're going to get for CO. We never had tax stamps as you know having lived here. I think you should build shelves with mirrors at a 45 degree along the tops of the cans.

No tax stamp for Louisiana, but Jax had a tendency to incorporate their logo into Oklahoma, Mississippi and Alabama tax stamps, so there might be the reason for the confusion.

Scott that is a cool idea about the 45 degree mirror that would look great with bottom opened cans. I now have a new collecting approach an I just sold several bottomed opened cans. But don't tax stamps only go on bottom? A vanity lid collection will be cool.

I like the tax lid forum idea! It will be a blast as that matures to get a feel for what was actually shipped where.

I will get one of those Old Germans with a MI lid one day. That seems like such a strange combination, but there have been a few dumped there...should be legit.
