My Barn Siding Beer Sign

#1

Post by Tom Clark »

Latest BCCA magazine had a great article by Tom Terwilliger about barn siding beer signs. I also have a barn siding beer sign. It's a Goetz Country Club. It measures 24"x36". I haven't had to do any touch up work to it and haven't ever waxed it. The story on that sign is that about 20 years ago a coworker went to Eastern Kansas to visit his in-laws who live on a farm. Near by was an old farm site with a few empty buildings. The barn was covered with tin signs with the back sides facing outward. With a claw hammer he was able to remove two signs before getting nervous and leaving. I bought both signs from him and tried to get him to tell me where exactly this barn was. He would only say that it was near Iola, KS. He quit his job less than a year later and moved out of state. I sold the extra sign at the Abilene show years ago. I also have a Balboa tin sign that I bought at a flee market in Hutchinson KS about 19 years ago. It measures 20"X35". The bottom 4" and left 1" have been cut off. I suspect this might have been cut to place between 24" centered studs in a barn but just guessing. What was a Balboa sign doing in Kansas?

Back in the late 80's / early 90's there was a barn find in Oklahoma. Dozens of 3 x 4 Silver Fox tin signs from Peter Fox of Oklahoma City were nailed to the interior of a barn, painted side in. Except for multiple nail holes, most of the signs were in good shape with great color.

Need to look at the dilapidated barns around here closer! Did find a 1926 Kansas license tag next to a barn that had been used to patch the barn...

Finally I don't have to ask "do tell the story". I'm confused as to why he wouldn't tell you where the barn was, that's kind of crappy.
