I think the flat top had soup can lids & was left over stock re used to hold oil or roofing tar or something like that? But just going by my old memory. Think Captain Stejskal has that can & may know more about the flat top version. LEON.

Thanks to Charlie for posting a pic of his HP Blatz OD. It ended up in the right hands.

And Leon, I'm thinking I should just make you a deal for yours as it now has a similarly unique backstory as the can that started the longest running Advertise thread in the history of the Rusty Bunch Forum. All due to you being ticked off over Red Miller OI's. That, my friend, is world class marketing...

We should sticky it to the top. Lots of good information in here. I know certain people would be extremely upset to see this thread continue or get stickied & may even blow a major gasket. LEON.

Marc, here's a picture of that flat top Blatz OD you mentioned in this link. I can't believe I'm the only one that noticed the Blatz flat on table, has about 1/2 inch or more space between the "BREWED IN USA" at top & the rim above it while the Captains has a small, about half the size or space, more like 1/4 inch between the "BREWED IN USA" & top rim. Am I the only one seeing this? LEON.

Looking at Captains can & looking at the can in old WW11 Black & white photo, you'll see a huge difference in spacing at top of can. LEON.

I guess this aint a bump, it didn't move to the top. it's already at the top.

Well, that's disappointing. I recall talk of the extant flat, but I don't recall photos or it being a J-Spout can body with different lids. I thought it was the can we saw in the WWII photos. I had an Iroquois that never got the OD paint job, and it had a similar bottom with the top cut out. Someone had a replacement J-Spout lid put on it before I got it.

Here's my theory, which is pure speculation & some might find ridiculous or absurd. I don't have a lot of older Crown cans or info to observe like Marc, but, just possibly Crown first had sheets made as flat top sheets which are taller then cone top cans. You can shorten a flat sheet to cone size but you can't make a shorter cone sheet bigger to flat size. After running flat tops they then cut these sheets down 1/4 inch to make j-spouts out of them. Many get filled & sent over seas. War ends & they got all these rolled unfilled j-spouts, what to do with them? Sell to shoe polish company who slaps paper label over them. BUT, Now you still got all these cut downed shortened sheets that either never got rolled into j spouts or got rolled but never lidded. What to do with these sheets? Add soup can lid & sell to any other company to fill with what ever they want, oil, roofing tar, ect, ect. You can't put beer into soup can lidded cans anyways. They tried that with what they called at the time a Sanitary can used to hold fruits & vegatibles & soup, condensed milk, ect, ect in 1931+32 & the 80 pounds per square inch pressure generated by the Pasturization process burst the lids & seams everytime. SO, how can anyone think a soup can lidded beer can held Beer? LEON.

My speculation is that the flattops came after the cones. The J-Spout is an odd duck anyhow, as Blatz used Continental conetops exclusively until then. They used American Can Co. flattops after the war, so they obviously had new equipment installed to fill them. My thought is the OD flats were filled after the switch, and would have been American Can Co. cans.

Right, soup can lids couldn't withstand the pressure, this is well documented.

Hard to figure out, So Captains flat can is on a Crown j-spout Body, while the taller flat top in black & white military pic is a American can co flat your saying? Possible. out of the 3 cans made, j-spout, hi pro, flat, it seems which ever one they used or filled last would be the one with the left over cans being sold & reused elsewhere. BUT, we have 2 different left over cans being reused, the j-spout & the flat. But some say that Captains soup can lidded can was never a reused can but actually contained beer. If so that makes only 1 can actually being reused, the j-spout but I don't believe Captains can held beer so were back to 2 being reused. This must mean they filled the Hi Pro first but that don't make sense either. 2 different left over cans don't make sense. would be nice to find a Blatz OD flat top with no soup can lids & compare to Captains. Also the beer openings is always near rim of flat top or tab because that's where your mouth goes to drink it. With Captains can opened in the middle you'd poor beer all over your face, unless you were using a glass but don't look like they were using many glass's to drink beer in these military pics. LEON.,

Leftovers could have been used as ductwork or many other things. Nobody knew when the war would end, so leftovers aren't a surprise. Speculation is fun, but we won't know who made the flattop unless one turns up.

Aren't those paper cups in the photo?

Through out the years have owned many different OD's & many of them been opened with what looked like a bayonet, some a screwdriver, some a knife, some a Church key. If you don't have a Church key handy because your far from the local Bar or Cantina & in the Jungle & all you got is your Bayonet, Then good chance your not carrying a glass or plastic cups either. And good chance your going to open it along the rim like This Genesee OD I have. LEON.
