Drewrys paintover Goebel WF

#1

Post by PinBeer »

I think I've got one of those silver and white oval Drewrys with a Goebel Extra Dry Withdrawn Free underneath. Anyone have experience with the Drewrys in particular on rubbing them out? Worth doing for the WF Goebel?

Here's a pic of the "best" example out of 3 I was able to rub out. Still not the greatest as the copper is SO thin and any slight ripple has you blast right thru the gray primer and take out the copper and go right to the base coat or to bare metal.

Thanks, Chris. That's just the kind of info I was interested in. Seems doable at least.

I was thinking the can would be more interesting as a WF Goebel than the Drewrys (hmmm, that makes it sound like some sort of "brand change" operation - don't go there). I see in the USBC that they're not valued very high though. Have they been found in any quantity before?

Alot of the WF cans (maybe all?) in the USBC are undervalued. I heard this was done on purpose but can't remember the reasoning....

Yeah i heard that once too and it was so some Wf specialists could fill the holes in their collection without breaking the bank. No idea if its true or not but it seems far fetched.

Lots of cans in the USBC were given the short end of the stick when it came to pricing. I think the WFs were grossly undervalued. Try to score those cans for anywhere even close to book value. There are a few exceptions, but generally it can't be done. One exception that comes to mind are the Pabst WF non-OD cans. Some of those are pretty easy to find and I've even got some in my totes (rolled examples).

The thing about WF is that many collectors don't consider them major label differences so there's a chance that a WF can is sitting in someone's tote at a good price and maybe even unnoticed. I turn every can that I see if I think there's a chance it's a WF. Black Millers ... yup, I turn those too (it gives me something to do).

I bought a few cans from a non-collector that included a very clean Drewrys white oval, USBC 56-2.

I inspected it at home and noticed a couple scratches right of the seam with coppery paint beneath, and in one spot, the word "revenue" visible. Hmmm. That predates the Drewrys. Not familiar with paintovers, I of course went straight to the RB site for an answer and landed on this discussion. Then I searched for a good seam photo of a Goebel WF, and found one on the Michigan Beer Cans site. There it was. The photo also explained part of a second word I could make out, "exportation."

Ok, mystery solved (with the help of some great Web resources). But I have no experience rubbing out paintovers. It sounds like rubbing compound might work. Before I roll up my sleeves and start rubbing, I thought it best to first ask: Any of you guys have advice on converting Drewrys white ovals to Goebel WFs?

Thanks

Jeff.

I've worked on 3 of these cans and the one pictured above was the "best" and I use the term loosely. The copper paint is very thin and it's very difficult to tell when you've went through the silver of the Drewrys, then the gray primer...and to the copper, then to bare metal. As seen in the picture, I went thru the copper many times and to the bare metal without ever seeing copper. Goodluck, it's a tough can to rub out.

Also, I only use HEAVY DUTY rubbing compound. I started out the can with fine grit and that made it nearly impossible to get any bite into the Drewrys paint and I had to press really hard, thus blowing thru the copper. Once I switched over to heavy duty rubbing compound, I was able to at least get larger areas of copper.

Still have mine (has it been a year already??), haven't touched it still. But mine has a couple spots that show up near the seam as well that let the copper and a bit of text be seen. That, along with no primer stripe showing, made me think that maybe they just painted the Drewrys right over the Goebel without the primer. That would seem to contribute to a tougher rubout?

(hey, Steve - still interested in it?).

I'm tempted to leave it in its current state. Condition now is 1-/2+, and I can have the best of both worlds, knowing the Goebel is entombed beneath.

On the other hand, I might try the seam, where mistakes will be hidden on the shelf. If I reach for the heavy duty rubbing compound, I'll post results.

Thanks for feedback.

The toughest part of the can (other than the dented front that made the front rather pox-ridden) the seam was where I took the most time so I could display the WF statement. Lucklily, the word "withdrawn" came out but "Free" rubbed away before I realized I was removing it rather than uncovering it.
