Rand,
Interesting choice! Looks like 0 209 09 0 from Volume II in the Commemorative section. That would open up the Retro project to some more cans.

Maybe anyone interested in this list could chime in and answer the following questions to possibly narrow down or more firmly define what a Retro can can be.

Retro Questions
• Does Retro refer to only a brand being brought back?
• Does Retro refer to only a can’s design being brought back?
• Does Retro refer to both of the above?
• Does a Retro can have to be in current or recent production?
• Can Retro include “Commemorative” cans?
• Should a Retro can include “flavors” not existing before, but using the new design? (Only had beer before but now lists ale, bock, light, etc?)
• Any other parameters you can suggest for consideration?

I did a project a while back with thoughts of a BCCA magazine article. I looked up possible reference cans used in the design of the BCCA commemorative cans. Could qualify a couple of them if so decided.

While getting suggestions for retro cans, no one stepped up and offered what they thought the criteria for a Retro can should be, so I posted the question in the General Discussion Forum. Got a couple responses that made sense. Here's the link:

https://www.therustybunch.com/phpBB3/vi ... =1&t=45060

With what was offerred, I modified the original list (first pic), created a new list (second pic) and created a third possible list (third pic) in case someone wants to include some commemorative cans as Retros.

I summed it up this way. It's becoming obvious that with these responses, we can't really pinpoint a true definition of a Retro can. Every opinion is legitimate in its theory and examples.

If Retro cans have a place in your collection, then by all means, they should meet YOUR definition of a Retro can.

Yes, John. The 9-0-5 is in the middle image above. It's in the middle row, 4th can from the right.

There were a lot of offerings for Retro can samples. I revised the first image to go with what seemed to be the response making the most sense between this thread and the one in General Discussion. That comment was:

"Retro should resemble the original can. Name with a new design is a new can."

So, I created a new list (2nd pic) based on that theory. Never got any feedback if CANv cans could be considered Retro nor did anyone include the series of Coors commemorative cans as Retros. So unless there's more dialogue on the topic, I'll stay with the middle image and revise the Excel file when I get a chance.

OK, so this is a bottle but it copies a can

There's a can for this Buckeye but I've only had the bottle. IMHO, this is one of the best tasting retros there is.

Interesting that Sterling uses the 360° lid. A quick check of the Current Cans Supplement produced 57 different cans using that kind of lid.

Not familiar with the Monterey label.

Here is a new Wiedemann that is made in Cincinnati now, Cincinnati rather than Newport. I like the logo on the back which seems authentic back to Wiedemann Brewing and it even gives a bit of history on the back panel (if you can manage to read the small print in the pic)

Ok trying to correct from my post of what is a Genesee Retro is and will make my case .. here is a basic timeline of the famous white Genny Beer cans.. the steel
Cans up to the Our one Brewery Makes it best , which I only have a straight steel and crimped steel and they had alum version - then went to the bigger oval with wheat stalk then the more reddish label with gold bands and cursive G then and then I will say the retro label that looks like the Our 1 Brewery makes it BEST label - but now it’s ( one great Brewery One great taste ) which came out around 2010 time frame and we were so pumped when’s Genny went back to the classic label !! Then Genny kept making changes to its Red Dot label .. so if that alum One Brewery Makes it Best is a can made in 2000s let me know and I need to find one Image Image

I subscribe to the theory that a retro should be as much as possible like an original can. Modify the design...it's a new can. Change a slogan...it's a new can. As always, just my opinion.

@kb
I'm not the Retro expert or anything like it. It was just a project I did when the interest was up prior to the CANvention. When I asked for feedback, that's what told me how to interpret what a Retro can was.

Everyone will have their own interpretation of what a Retro can should look like. Just like the Ugly Can Tournament. Some people thought some of those listed shouldn't be there.

There's no wrong answer here. Everyone's answer is correct...

Alright Mi- Cans , I stand a bit corrected , my bad as kids say .. wasn’t aware that Genesee put the Our 1 Brewery white can out when they did a little Retro fun run a few yrs back ( back before I became a Genny die hard ) i think they randomly stuck a retro can in 30 paks as a promotion ( I will look into that more ) but came across Mark B website with this pic and info .. Image.. I do have the 4 more older retros and just never knew about the white can ( ignorance is bliss I guess ) .. but it was around 2011 that they brought back the old Cream Ale label and the old white can , jist had s different slogan .. I prolly began my lust for Genny in 2009ish and then it was the can on left that was being purchased at stores Image

Mi-Cans - we have finalization and an answer for the Genesee retro dilemma .. picked this up yesterday at 12 Horse Show , and based on there commemorating their 125 yrs of brewing since 1878 this means they released in 2003 time frame Image

@BrooklynBeer

If you read this thread from the beginning there was an interest in knowing what brands had Retro cans out there. So when everybody started contributing what they believed to be Retro versions, I put some images together as reference. Discussion continued and it became evident that a retro should be as much as possible like an original can. Modify the design...it's a new can. Change a slogan...it's a new can. There' was never any criteria stated or implied such as dates, brewers, whatever. So if you think something's a Retro can or isn't a Retro can...then that's what it is or isn't!

The original request was intended to gather info/cans for the CANvention Chapter Display in which the RB Chapter placed second.
