How many of you soak mystery cans? Share your favorite mystery can.
Unexpected Canadian 7-Up.
This can seriously was a mystery can and I had no hopes for it. Last night I chucked it in some old acid and just pulled it out and saw that it’s from Toronto.
And the Squirt was pretty decent. And figured the 7-Up could use a buddy in the acid.

Oh! And I dug this the other day. When I first saw Blue and White Stripes I thought hell yeah I have some killer Beer can. Man was I disappointed when we pulled it out. Lol.

I usually only soak a mystery can if it has visable paint & I still can't figure it out what it is. 100% rusty non readable can I rarely soak but will on certain occasions. LEON.

Re: How many of you soak mystery cans?
If I lived in PA or California or New York or east Coast or Pacific northwest or any of those other places that are know for the land of rare $1,000+ cans I would soak Mysteries. Digging in Michigan I got tired of soaking Mysteries just to find a common Strohs, Pfeiffer, Goebel, Pabst, Budweiser, ect, ect. How often does anybody dig a $1000+ can in Michigan? Not very often. How many $1,000+ cans (book value) are even brewed in Michigan. You can't even dig Cardinals, Altes Sportsmans, National Sportsman, 7/11's or any other under $500 Michigan can. LEON.

Your Pfeiffer OD is from Detroit, I live & dig near Detroit, You got a better chance of digging that Pfeiffer OD way out there in Alaska 5,000 miles away then I do being only 5 miles away. LEON.

How many of you soak mystery cans?
You know I’ve looked at the California can’s trying to count how many $1000+ there are because I figure they have to be here in Alaska. Now you have me wondering which state I dig more can’s from?Leon wrote:If I lived in PA or California or New York or east Coast or Pacific northwest or any of those other places that are know for the land of rare $1,000+ cans I would soak Mysteries. that's was my exception or certain occasion mentioned above. If I dig a non beaded lids can with one big huge opener hole I can assume it's a mid 1930's can & I will take to soak, same with any j-spout or low pro or any cone. 2 very small church key holes on a late 50's early 60's dump & it's a Mystery? why waste your time? I Remember dumping some big opener 1930's cans that were Mysteries in a dry county in Alabama, Was very curious to see what these were. Ends up Krueger Ales but one was a very tough Sterling Ale LEON.

Re: How many of you soak mystery cans?
I only keep flats if they have at least one beadless lid, or if I find them in a dump I have previously found tough cans before. Cones I always soak out. I found apaches, E&B golden bud ales, black Dallas O/I and a four panel Black Eagle this way. After the 25,000th bud, strohs, Falstaff, schlitz crap, I had to draw the line somewhere.

Re: How many of you soak mystery cans? Share your favorite mystery can.
Constantly. Damn near every flat and cone that’s mostly solid I keep.
Especially pre war cans like Leon described.
My most common suspects are strohs and Drewrys scene cans.
My best mystery cans I’ve got were..
-Gotham cone
-Honors cone
-Embassy club ale flat (one of my earliest dumpers)
- no can co Johnny pfeiffer

Re: How many of you soak mystery cans? Share your favorite mystery can.
I did soak a zipper seam mystery can like you see on the war cans. I knew it had to date around 45-47. Ends up it was the earliest Pfieffer with can company date of 1946. Even though most Pfeiffers are common this is a tougher variation if your into small variations. LEON.

I soaked a can from the Walters dump (Pueblo) back in the 70s. That was the huge pile behind the brewery. I still have the can some where.

Was a total mystery that I soaked on April 1st of all days from the previous fall digs and it was the last can out of the acid. The bad news is I didn't remember where I found it
Thanks. Dave

Sweet can. And sad you don’t remember where you find it.DaveNH wrote:Was a total mystery that I soaked on April 1st of all days from the previous fall digs and it was the last can out of the acid. The bad news is I didn't remember where I found it
What I do is I code name my sites. For example I saw a moose run across the road in front of me near where I’ve been digging cans lately and I call that the Loose Moose site, so when I dig mystery cans I actually take photos of them and I Catalogue my hunts when I get home. That I way I know where they came from if I dig a good mystery can.

Look for the Hall of Shame thread. You'll see them in the lineup. Edit....I found a pic of the Silver State on my iPad. Middle can. Was told the dump had them in it, so I soaked every low pro cone I found. Took 3 days before I could identify it.

E & B Golden Bud was one of my first mystery cans back in the 70s. The Golden Rod was dug by Rustmonger when I was with him at Conifer, NY. The New England Ale and Neuweilers long opener were total mysteries from my trip to Maine back in May with DaveNH.

Why drive 12 hour one way to dig Pre-Tax Tru Blu ales, Genny 12 Horse Longopeners, Gamecock Ales, Apollos, Neuweilers Bock, and Krueger’s Baldies when you can locally drive 10 hours round trip and dig Pfeiffer, Goebel, Drewrys and Strohs?

Re: How many of you soak mystery cans? Share your favorite mystery can.
I always do. The mid 30s cans I got in Massachusetts last May were mysteries, and one was a Stroud Ale. I use the "squeeze test." If i give the can a gentle squeeze and it does not crumble then it may be solid enough to survive. Sometimes they clean up better than cans with a lot of label showing.,

Curiosity always gets the best of me, so I soak them all. My best mystery can would have to be a Keeleys Half and Half cone.

Around here 99% of the cones are Canadian Ace beer or Country Clubs. So I was happy when I pulled this out of the oxalic: Duquesne Can-O-Beer OD.
Another fun one was a Genny 12-Horse Ale OI far from home along a stretch of the former US-40 (pre-I-70) in my home town.I'm constantly finding good cans... in my mailbox. *** My third year of waging Schlitzkrieg on the Flint Hills of Kansas ***
