What do you use to haul your cans home?

#1

Post by DanielinAk »

I hit the local Alcoholic’s hang out called the Brown Jug, where out back there is a small fenced in area where they chuck all their cardboard (Boxes)
They are free for the taking to any and all. Typically I’ll take 4 cases out digging for cans. Each case holds 24 cans stacked two high. This cuts down on having to find paper and hauling paper out in the woods and wrapping each can so they don’t scratch.

I just picked all these from there, and I’ll give some away to those who go digging with me. As I’d hate to see a good can get scratched.

What your using is my number one favorite method.
On trips where we've run out of them, will use grocery bags and wrap the cans in newspaper. Also use can flats as well, Only problem with them is if the load shifts then they are all over the place.

Nice. I haven’t had a load shift yet cause I drive easy lol.

Boxes similar to those, but smaller for the rarer/fragile/better condition cans and plastic grocery bags for the others.
Load shifting is a concern but rarely happens, I worry more about cans bouncing on each other and putting holes In each other.

Ive never had issues with pad shifting in these boxes. I’ve had them get scratched in Walmart bags or wrapped in paper when the paper wasn’t enough or got wet.

Those liquor boxes are the best. Walmart bags are OK for the short term but offer no protection.

Sorry guys, I used the talk method for texting on my original post and didn't check. I just saw it and it looks like jibberish...lol :smt006

As far as bags, I like those big plastic bags with the handles from Aldis. There also pretty sturdy and easy to carry out of the woods. Not to mention that they are so gaudy, you couldn't lose one if you tried.

As far as loads shifting, many of you have not seen me drive a Tacoma down a two track or going up or down a mountain. When you can make Aho nervous  , thats saying something.....

Man, you sure have been digging some cans, is all that from scatter dumping?

Those boxes are the best. I took a case of cans home with me on the plane from Oregon.
Taped up the lid and(Ed showed me this) made a handle with some tape & twine and carried it on the plane.
Fits nicely in the overhead bin. :smt023
As Greg mentioned I like using those cloth type grocery bags in the dump for carry out, Then put them in the boxes back at the truck.

I’m lucky where I step out of the car and start detects cans. No dumps here just a scattering of cans that have been tossed out the widow over the years
