Maine in May

#1

Post by canaddict »

Rusty, myself, and Uncle Dan were out in Maine last week at the same time as Dave Reid's team (with Chris and Dwight). Unfortunately, we did not hook up, as we were working the area a little North, but I understand both teams did well!

It was a wet one, with rain and overcast skies like 6 of the 7 days. However, it was another outstanding adventure. One day we saw more moose (about 7) than vehicles (2)! We saw a couple black bears and some nice looking beavers.

Found lots of dumps, several of which were pre-war.

We all shipped lots of cans back from Bangor and will update this once we have some cleaned cans and such.

Great time and I can't wait to get back out there for more! Can't get enough of this crazy hobby and the outstanding adventures!

Dwight wasn’t able to make it out with us. You guys saw the moose, bear and beaver. We saw more animal scat that week of the first 2 than I’ve ever seen, piled up every place we stopped; perhaps we scared them up your way.

Supposedly there are over 35,000 bears in Maine, so I always had my bear spray at the ready. Unbelievable nature in the North Maine Woods. At night, the forest was alive with crazy sounds such as loons, coyotes, etc.

At one camp, we ran into the producer of this show, which is supposedly in their 15th season. They were onsite shooting an episode and were joined by an older guy that they referred to as "Mr. Orvis" - evidently the founder of Orvis. They were beside themselves when we explained to them what we do and the entire crew came out to the truck to see what we had found. The producer wants to do a reality show about the Rusty Bunch and our can digging adventures. I gave him a Rusty Bunch business card and told him that he needed to contact our management.

I can't believe how many quarts we found! Since they are so heavy and we were shipping cans out, we only kept a few each. We found all variations of Rheingold quarts cone tops, a variety of Kruegers, etc. Rusty brought a few in his luggage and I am sure will post some before and after pictures.

They were fishing the streams right after "ice out" and they were getting 18 inch brook trout. We brought all of our fishing gear, but didn't have time to fish.

Pictures coming soon. I know we got at least one of the white Genessee 12 Horse OIs!

KB - I leave for Cooperstown on Friday morning and will be up in the Adirondacks for the next week or so around Gloversville, NY. Staying in a cabin from the early 1900s. Let me know if you or anyone wants to hook up. Hoping to find some of those tough NY cans!

Scott,
Looks like you guys did really well! Can't wait to see the after pictures! Again, thanks for thinking of me and the invite. Between not having much vacation time and getting over pneumonia, the cards just weren't in my favor. We will hook up. Had a great time when you were in Yooperville!

A great adventure for my first time up in the North Woods of Maine.
What a Blast this was Scott, thanks for setting this up, the planning and research you put into it.
As Scott mentioned I took a few cans home in my carry on bag. I've cleaned those and I've got some pictures. The rest of my cans got delivered yesterday so I will get to those soon.
We bounced around a bit staying at several really cool old camps. Here's a few of my pictures.

Scott has an old 1937 Maine road map that had these travel camps marked on them, we stopped at several of them and metal detected. this one with the old picnic table had a good amount of scatter, we dug well over a dozen cans here.

This should put Scott into consideration for unlucky dumper of the year. Looking for a pull off Scott drove the edge of the road and hit an area of frost coming up and got stuck. It was like quicksand. we worked it for at least an hour and at least 50 feet up the road. we were way out in the middle of nowhere with no cell coverage, we would have been sleeping in the woods if we hadn't got out.

I found a few of the HP Tiger Heads but they were missing their sides. 🙄

Looks like some great color on all those you cleaned! Mr Reid will be cleaning our haul soon.

Dave and I found an inordinate amount of coffee pots and kettles this last trip. I have a white one earmarked for my apartment.

Also noticed some of the SS tabs have the tops bowed out, similar to these full Canada Dry.

I found more unopened cans from the 70s - 2000s this trip than I ever have before

Great pics Scott and Steve! We didn’t see any moose only a few deer and a fox. Lots and lots of scat so they must have smelled us and headed back into the woods. Love, love the Rheingold quart. One of my favorite quarts and have only dug it once. Great job Steve.
Thanks. Dave

Thanks for all the great comments guys, the fun continues.

Chris, we found Tiger Heads in quarts, cones and nearly all the crowntainers we found are Tiger cream Ales, but they are not cleaning up very well.
I was surprised how well the 12oz cone I have pictured cleaned up I had no idea what it was.
The picture with all the coffee pots is a town dump we got permission to dig. a lot of cool stuff but not a lot beer cans.
Here's a few more pics.

Dave, The Rheingold Lager quart was kind of a fluke, it was in this area that was recently logged. branches everywhere and things all pushed around and run over. I had found some tabs and a mystery crowntainer and left them on some debris as we worked are way down this area.
When I went back to get them I came at it from a different angle, and there was an old tailgate right next to where I left my cans. I noticed the top of a quart cone sticking out of the ground below the tailgate, I pulled it straight up and was blown away seeing that can come out of there in that condition.

How many of us were up there? Mark K, Matt Menke, Charlie Bacon, and I were up near Moosehead Lake. And Mark and I spent a day and a half digging Western Mass with Jon L. Found a couple 30s dumps there.

In Maine not many 30s cans, but we found a HUGE campers dump dating from about 1949 to 1964 or so, with lots of variety and some tough labels. Pics to come but my favs so far were six Dawsons Diamond (4 ale, 2 beer) and I finally dug a brown/white Schlitz Tall Boy flat.

Finished cleaning my cans and will be putting them up on the shelf today. Ended up with some great cans and some tough rust!
It was an outstanding adventure, and I would like to head back up that way again.
As with most places these days its tough to find cans in good condition. A good portion of our cans were mysteries, but cleaned up better than I thought they would. It was a lot of fun, and I'm looking forward to my next adventure.

Hey Thanks, Bjorn and Mike.
Looking forward to seeing Scotts cans all cleaned up.
Here's a better pic of the Cremo.

Rusty, the Cremo came out great! What is that doing in Maine!?

I just finished cleaning cans this afternoon. However, I am out on Lido Beach for a couple of days now for the Sarasota Offshore Grand Prix boat races. Will have them up in the next couple of days.

I soaked my Stroud for like 10 days and it just kept getting better and better. You can actually make out what it is now!

Nice job on the 50 adds to the shelf! I think I am about there as well.

Can't wait for next year!

So, I added over 80 cans to my "dumped it" collection from this Maine trip. What a pleasure it was digging with Rusty. We had an amazing time AND found some good rust! We have TONs of places to go back to as well!

Here are some photos. Grant it, I am not the best "cleaner" in the world and probably screwed a few of these up. But when you can add that many cans, I can't complain. Nine different OIs.

Here's to getting out there!
