Get along little doggies.......

Here's some of my pictures from our California digging trip. This was my third trip out West with Ed, second time with Dale and Scott.
I had a great time camping and digging with these guys out in the open range of California.
Ed's research, map work, and Bill and His previous June trip got us into a hot location, in the footsteps of past Hunters, Campers, and Cowboys.

For a suburban Chicago "Kid" being out in the Open range, with cow pies and cattle seemingly everywhere, the heat, the scenery and terrain feels like something out of an old Cowboy song.

Whoopee Ti Yi Yo Get along little doggies,
It's your misfortune and none of my own
Our first camp, we spent four nights here "dry camping" no running water, no river, no pond. In the 95+ degree heat, with the dirt, the dust, the sweat, and the ash. At night the sounds of a cow bleating for her lost calf, coyotes howling around our camp, also surrounded by many pre war camp pits.

Looks like a great trip. Almost felt like I was there. Except for the AC and running water at home.

It took me a week to recover! I am already planning next year's Lake Tahoe Show. This one will be 3-days: Friday/Sat & Sunday morning. There is no shortage of things to do at Lake Tahoe and our motel was less than a mile from the state line= Casinos! Mike Wilbur, Steve Gresham and Larry La Duc even went out one morning for a few hours and found some gold Buffalos!

I am also planning the next post-show dumping trip...big plans for that one! Kind of like Christmas...have to wait another whole year for it to happen again!

Steve,
As always, a great pictorial with story! Definitely roughing it compared to our comfy confines at Ahoville. Awesome scenery, and cans and condition!

Our beer of choice at the show: Tahoe Beer....3 different kinds (from Reno!) There was a liquor store about a 1/4 mile from the show motel. We had a few of these in camp.

Why is it I have a feeling there's something about the Acmes. Why bring back all those CA cockroaches?

You take what you can get....have to dig them all out in case something good is mixed in with them. Plus they a great age indicator.....means you are in the right area....

I don't even have this can! It is the first Rainier Club Beer in a can (you can tell by Rainier in a slant.) The brand was introduced in May 1939 but I haven't seen any ads for it in cans until 1940. This ad is dated May, 1940. Dale says these cans are dated August 11, 1940 on the bottom lid...Wow! That's 78 years ago!

We feel just like that golfer in the ad with all these cans! :smt023 :smt023

I assume the Rainier Clubs did not have an alcohol statement.

They come with a N.O. 4% by weight statement as well.

Here's a couple photos for Rusty. That last camp we stayed at, Dale & I dumped there in June 2005. We found a pit of Wilshire Clubs right across the road! It was over 100 degrees that day too. The RUSTlings story was called "The Dog Days of Summer."

Bill and I found these in June but had no way to get them home since we were flying, so we left them. Also at the camp in June were 2 mystery cones that turned out to be Gold Ages.....we had to go back but all we brought back was these tongs...

Hey Guys, Thanks for all the feedback, awesome.

Leon, it was a great thrill digging that Willows can in a can. The first one out of that hole was pretty exciting as well. I'm not sure how many we kept there were probably around a case, but most were pretty rough, fade, rusty and dented. Then this can in a can rolled out from the side of the hole.
Dale said "we gota get a picture of that".., pretty cool!!

Ed, the cans are coming out great!, Thanks for all the pics, I found my way to the Facebook page and have been checking that out too.
Dale looks deep in that Wilshire Club pit, June 2005, that's about time for some reason I decided to do a google search on beer cans, and well.... As they say, the rest is history.

It's only been two weeks since our trip, but back in the stress and pressures of the working world it seems like a long time ago.
Can't wait till Christmas!!

Went to Dale's this morning as he has all the cans from our trip. The one is spectacular but may not be the best (there may be one with a shiny top)...Scott gets first pick...who knows, this one could be mine?!
