I got back last night after several days digging with Ed, Dale & Steve. They are still out for another day. We put quite a few cans in the truck and had a good time in spite of the heat. Here's a teaser photo of a can fresh from the ground that I found. More to follow.

As it says right on the can, that find looks Grade A!

Before I read the note and enlarged the image I thought that the can cleaned up pretty good. Then I enlarged the picture and saw it was just out of the ground. That can will be amazing! Can't wait to see what all was dug.

Great job guys!

For the first time in my last several trips, I managed to come home with all of my tires fully inflated and no other significant mishaps occurred. You will have to find another worthy candidate as my year of holding the trophy is nearing an end.

Here's what Bill & I found in June, pretty much in one afternoon. We knew we had tons more to dig but had to box up 10 cases of cans for shipping and catch a plane. We had the Tahoe Show coming up in July, so what better time to return. Bill couldn't go this time because he is on vacation in Japan, so I invited Dale, Rusty and Scott to go back with me. We found cans as soon as we got out of our trucks and we killed it. We were golden for about 24 hours and then cooled down a bit. We all agreed Bill will get one can of each that we found, since he was with me on the original find.

Not too often you find a surface dump in California...nothing big here but still lots of fun!

With driving to the Tahoe Beer Can Show (co-sponsored by the Rusty Bunch & 49er Chapter), I was on the road for 10 days. I just got back Friday afternoon and even slept all day today (Saturday.) We brought back close to 14-15 cases of cans, mostly 30s cans! Dale has them all and will clean them so we can take a glory picture and then do the split. I'm still tired but had a great time. I brought back a case of cans at the show! Dale even got an Apollo! Thanks to all who attended the show, the Rusty Bunch and Keith for all their help! It should be even bigger and better next year! This proves California is NOT dumped out, but it ain't easy to find anything good - we worked our tales off in 95 degree heat. With a little luck, research and help from your friends, it is possible to bring a few cans home. See you next year!

Isn't that L.A. variation tough for the Brown Derby?

It's definitely tougher (less easy) than the Rainier and Humboldt versions. The Grace Bros. LA version is the really hard one to find. Next is Santa Rosa Grace Bros followed by Columbia. I'd say the LA Brewing version slots in behind those and is comparable to Columbia. The Grace Bros. cans, particularly LA are the difficult ones to find. The others can be tracked down without a lot of effort. The Humboldt and Rainier versions I typically don't bother taking unless they are in pretty nice condition. Kevin was being generous when he gave those an R1 rating.

BTW - I do have a decent Santa Rosa Brown Derby for sale/trade if somebody is looking for one.

I'd like to add that the LA Brewing Co Brown Derby comes both "Pilsner Type" and just "Pilsner," with the Pilsner Type being the harder of the two.

Scott, you "owe" Ed big time for this trip !! When was the last time someone dropped you off at a spot and said dig here and you find 30s cans in the 1st 30 minutes??!! :smt030 :smt023 :smt006 <kidding>

Dan it was actually more like three minutes vs. thirty. I parked the truck, picked out a spot for my tent and tossed it there still in the bag. Then I grabbed the bug and found an O/I pit with a case of keepers about ten feet from where I dropped my tent.

Ed to his credit does a great job of picking the spots. His weakness is that he can't actually find the cans. That's where I come in. He works best in a supervisory capacity telling us "guy's, there must be cans around here somewhere" as he gets a cool beverage from the ice chest. :smt005

All those cans would have been found whether Scott was there or not. Typically we find more cans after Scott leaves! It's my research that finds the cans, not someone's physical presence. I can always go it alone so then I dont have to listen to all the crap on how great someone is. I wish someone would take to me a 30s spot to dig cans....just for once. :smt017

And now back to Brown Derby OIs - I checked mine by Grace Bros. The Santa Rosa one is Pilsener Type while the one from LA is just Pilsner.

We brought all the cans home to NM to clean and do a glory photo before the split. Dale is cleaning the cans and here's the first bucket, before and after.
