Western mass with Pete and Jon L.

#1

Post by MarkB » Thu May 24, 2018 12:06 pm

Went for a trip to Western Mass to see Pete S. and Jon L. Had to cut it short because of a family emergency, but still came back with more cans that I've come back with in tears. Have at least 150-200 to clean I suspect, plus bottles and lots of big, heavy old canning jars and some odds and ends. First batch is in oxalic now, but here are some pics..

My take-home..

Image

Scatter dumping found only parts of quarts. Saved one top with a cap to see if the cap will soak.

There were tons of small pits and piles along an old RR path turned into biking/jobbing path. Mystery flats, a few cones, and a cool local embossed bottles with a plain porcelain stopper. Pete dug one intact (which he kindly gave to me as he's dug them before). I found two more of the stoppers on broken bottle necks.

Revisited a huge dump we hit last year dug for about 6+ hours and just dented it. Seems to be from old vacation cabins. Very few local cans, mostly New York. Man, did they love Rheingold and Rupperts. Found a few Rheingold girls last year. Jon found one this time, I did not. But they also loved Krugers and Schaefer. Also found Gunthers (a first for this spot) the common mid 1950s label and the last "racetrack" label, and other oddballs: Camden, Trommers, Blatz, Black Labels, Piels, Horlacher, Hulls (the dull white can), Ballantine, etc. Some 12 oz and 8 oz Goebel beers (the Bantam can with the Rooster) Very few nationals, and most of the Budweiser were split-labels. A few brown Schiltz cans, a few Millers (black and white both) and a couple of Pabst. 99% were 12 oz flats. Found a handful of 16s. Only found 2 cones, neither of which could be IDd' Few Ale cans, and no bocks. Some cool soda cans too, mostly Cotts.

Lots of liquor bottles and a few beer bottles. Most of the beer containers were cans. The bottles all had 1952-1956 date codes on the bottom. Food cans but not as many as you'd expect.
Image

Several 6 oz Coke bottles, two from Springfield Mass, one from Conn, and one (in Spanish) from Cuba!.

I tend to burrow.

One local did a slow drive-by, then came back later. I was expecting a "PRIVATE PROPERTY!" rant, but he was a metal detectorist and thought it was cool what we were doing. Got out of his truck, checked the dump, then chatted awhile. I gave him a Rusty Bunch card.

@MarkB Great to see your recent success......Also great to hear that the Rusty Bunch card was shared. Hopes are that they will continue to pay off and get a well deserved member an unexpected call sometime that has a great payoff......or even a new member....

Still cleaning cans. May be done early next week. Never had such a high percentage (over 75%) be clean enough to save after the acid bath before. Went over my maps and noticed I'd passed so close to this dump before, but went down different roads only a couple miles away! So far have found nothing rare, but have found....

At least 4 different Krueger Beers
Hulls
Goebel Bantams
Goebel 22s
brown Schlitz, 12 and 16 oz
Some Newark Buds, several types.
2 types of Gunther flats
2 different Knickerbockers
a 16 oz Ballantine beer
Horlachers
Hampden Beer
multiple sodas, incl Cotts and Frosty
multiple Rheingolds,1 and 2 sided (no girls yet)
multiple Schaefer variations
a couple Ballantine Ales
Black Labels, Natick and a a single white one from Cleveland.

so, nothing exciting, but fun to dig and clean and a few new ones for the "I dumped it" shelf.....

Some pics.

What I kept. I decided to keep even common cans that don't fit my collection if I dumped them. So lots and lots of common stuff here. But what the hell, they were fun to dig. Wish I'd kept more clean Rheingolds (there's a sentence no dumper has ever said before) just to look for variations.

The red Black Labels are Natick, the Buds are Newark, the Schaefer are Albany, and the Schlitz is Brooklyn.

the non-beer cans.

The Horlachers have the PA tax stamp on the lid.
Image

Someone really liked Krueger Beer!
Image

Odds and Ends.

Image

Also dumped a bunch of the 8oz Goebel Bantams with the Rooster on the can, I've dumped them in western Mass before. The Michigan guys are probably sick of them, but it was a favorite can when I was a kid so I still get a kick out of digging some...

Haven't cleaned the pop bottles yet....

I agree with Ted. We do find them once in a while in the UP, not as often as you'd think though. Goog stuff all around!

FYI, the Goebels 12 oz have 2 variations, with gold outline around the word "Goebels" and with a red outline.
