Some southwest finds

#1

Post by Jay »

My brother and I spent a few days in western New Mexico and eastern Arizona. Too much snow in the mountains for pit digging so we looked for some surface dumps that may have color. We found a large dump of mostly oil cans, there were a few beers but they were few and far between. One pile was all irtp Mitchell’s, A/1 oi’s, and Koenig brau cones. Infortunately the beers were dominated by infamously dreaded two sided Coors. One mystery low pro turned out to be another Apache. At least we found some color.

Killer color at that. Nice instant oil collection. That Hortons is cool. Has it been dug out west before?

That Apache is awesome. You don't find those every day. What city is the Hamm's from?

Thanks, unfortunately most cans were sunburnt beyond soaking. The hamms were all from St. Paul. No Texas or California cans. This was mostly a shop dump. Tons of oil cans. I think Horton’s has been found out here before by others. I found a few on old 66 near Albuquerque before.

Nice find! I have always thought that if I didn't collect beer cans I would collect oil cans. Oil cans are interesting but I don't have room for them!

Why is it that Apaches only end up baked colorless in the desert, while thousands of Acmes and Budweiser's were encapsulated in Adobe walls in all their color and glory?

Probably because the Apaches didn't stack well.

That's OK, I understand. Were they total Mystery's when you found them? if so they cleaned up good enough to be readable. Nice score. :smt023 LEON.

As many of these that have been dumped (Apaches) over the years, you would think there would be a least a few dumpers with some color (buried and protected from the sun). They are always sun baked and "ghost" cans like those above.

Has anyone ever seen a dumper with color?

These were found in a high desert Mesa in Arizona with no color or indication at all. No cover and cattle had been stepping on them for 70 years. I have another year here. Maybe I can find one with better color...

There was that big find of like 70 dumpers in Arizona about 10 years ago wasn't there. Maybe Jay can do the same, only this time they'll be buried 2 or 3 feet & in grade 2 condition

Nice finds! Where was the Horton's originally from? The only thing I could find on the 'net was that it was a New York brewery. ???

As per USBC 1 it is from Metropolis Brewing and could be from either Trenton NJ or New York, NY.
