Little Muskego "What Gives"
Back to the mud, headed up to Little Muskego lake the day after Thanksgiving with Art Geotz for a little lake bottom scatter dumping.
Little Muskego Lake is just southwest of Milwaukee, it has been drawn down seven feet in an attempt to kill an invasive algae, Starry Stonewort.
The drawn down will remain throughout the winter, freezing the exposed lake bottom killing the algae.
Here's a few pictures of our adventure. You may remember this can, same lake. The lake bottom is very soft and we can't venture out to far from shore without sinking into the mud. Art found this pre pro Milwaukee Brewery bottle under one of these piers. As we were leaving this area Art finds this cool John Graf blob top bottle right along shore. I believe it was for Weise Beer, with the trade mark "THE BEST WHAT GIVES" John Graf made beer and soda. we move on to a different location. I found a couple pre pro bottles myself a clear Milwaukee Brewery bottle and a John Graf Co. bottle, not sure if it held beer or soda but it also has the slogan "THE BEST WHAT GIVES" embossed on it. And I also found this Ben Kornburger & Bros. bottle, to bad it's broken. Arts detecting, he gets a signal and I'm watching to see what he digs up, and then he pulls up this Pabst blob top bottle," Whoa!..., What, have you got a glass setting on your new detector" Funny thing, shortly after Art detects his bottle I get a signal and I dig up another brown Milwaukee Brewery bottle "What Gives" so I check my hole and right next to where the bottle was I find a Miller aluminum can. It was a fun day out, though the best can found was the Hamms can pictured, other than that just pieces of steel cans. This lake was even brutal on aluminum. Part of the reason may be because the area exposed for us to dig is the sallow area of the lake, no more than five feet deep when full. The old bottles were fun to find and only an hour from home, we returned two weeks later.

Re: Little Muskego " I dug a Propeller"
Headed back up to Little Muskego Lake with Art and we met Bjorn Hoverson Up there.
The temperature had dropped and it snowed the night before. We knew the ground would be frozen some but weren't sure how much.
We thought with the ground frozen we could access areas farther out. Turns out we could walk all the way out to the island but the digging was tough, I brought my mattock to break through the frozen ground. The frozen ground was 2 to 3 inches thick, once you bust through, the mud below was extremely soft I was able to extract this Steine but later dropped it on the ice shattering it. I've found many anchors digging drained lakes this is only the second one I've brought home, its so heavy I think it's solid lead. My wife asked me why I kept it. I told her I don't know, maybe I'll get a boat. We had our Badger Bunch Chapter Christmas party up at Pabst Best Place at the Pabst Brewery complex in Milwaukee, I brought a display of the bottles and some of the stuff we found at Little Muskego , bringing the Pabst blob top bottle back to where it came from, over one hundred years later. Well it's been a fun year of digging, and going to shows. Here's to a Happy New Year and mud on your boots in 2018

Re: Little Muskego "What Gives"
Surprised you don't sink 3 feet into the mud. I went to a big recreational Pond a few weeks ago they drained, it was popular since the mid 1800's. I had to rescue a guy with metal detector that was sunk in the mud 3 feet up to his knees. with the wet mud all around him the suction made it impossible for him to get out alone. I got a big 6 feet long plywood board & put it out in front of him, he still couldn't pull himself out. I had to go out there & both dig around his legs & pull him out at same time. Wasn't fun or easy. only other way out would be call the fire department to hoist him out. we didn't want to do that. Every time I walked out & sunk a foot I turned around & headed for shore. To much soft mud everywhere. I did get a Goebel O/I by shore, Bantam Goebel, 2 Strohs flats, 2 Prepro beer bottles, ect, ect. LEON.

Re: Little Muskego "What Gives"
Killer pics Rusty!
Funny stuff Cole- on the “props to you” comment.
I bet the peeps in the boat that day really wish they had their propeller. “Remember when (enter buzzed up captains name here) lost the prop and we had to paddle /swim all the way across the lake!” You just don’t forget days like that.
Little Muskego is very close to my house so I was able to check surface conditions often. It was verrry sticky in the fall and the cold snap finally allowed us to venture out to the big island. I found lots of aluminum cans and many old bottles that were not intact. In one spot I found numerous spoons and sterno’s, where a likely fisherman parked his boat in his favorite spot and fed himself those little canned Vienna Sausage things.
Here’s the article from when the can surfaced back in July ‘78. Bjorn

Re: Little Muskego "What Gives"
My Pleasure.....Thanks Keith
Leon, Well you have to be smart about it, one foot at a time, If you start to sink you back off. My first time here you could barley get two feet from shore. It can be very dangerous, It's a very scary and helpless feeling getting stuck. So what was the condition of the cans & bottles you found. Any Pics?Leon wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2017 11:52 pm Surprised you don't sink 3 feet into the mud. I went to a big recreational Pond a few weeks ago they drained, it was popular since the mid 1800's. Cole, I hope you can make it down to the Bullfrog chapter, Superbowl Sunday show Feb,4th
Hey Bjorn, or should I say "Zippy Hippie" LOL
Great article, I think that original gold 78' can is a bit tougher only 30,000 made. I had no problem finding the white one but haven't seen the gold available, not that I've spent a lot of time looking though.

YES, That's good advise & exactly what I do/did. I guess the other guy was not to smart. Don't want to hijack you thread/post anymore so might picture my finds in another thread. OH, & Nice bottles, I like those. LEON.

Re: Little Muskego "What Gives"
Cool story and love the bottle especially the pabst blob top! Did someone say lead? Sorry my other hobby is casting bullets, reloading and shooting. I think window weights are lead too?

Re: Little Muskego "What Gives"
Nice bonus bottles, Steve, Art, given that it was a trip for cans. Leon, I/we all really want to see your lake dump finds!!! Yes, as a fellow mudwalker, you develop a sixth sense in the soles of your feet and balance of when to proceed and when to back away.
