Beer Can Fun in the NW w/Carl & Scott

#1

Post by Cap-Sealed »

Got back Sunday night after another 4 great days in the woods. Tough going as it always seems to take a day to get there with traffic, grocery shopping, breakfast, gas, etc and then back a day too. We lost a full day with 2 flats tires on Scotts new 2017 Dodge Ram truck and he had to buy a whole new set of 4x4 tires to continue on. We would have probably doubled our bounty if we didn't lost that "tire" day.
a5.jpg
First afternoon in the woods...we dug a lot of old pits, but very few beer cans. Here's my first cans of the day (I left them.)

Les Schaub Tires to the rescue - good thing we had cell coverage. It took him a couple hours to get there and then back to town for a whole new set of 4x4 tires so this doesn't happen again.

I got into a nice mid-50s pit with cartoon series Jubilees! Of the 40,000+ wind tunnel cans, only 100 were the cartoon series, which are the best ones by far!

We dug for 6 hours straight at this camp - this was my first 30s strike. Acme OIs and Rainier cones...

My 2nd 30s strike...of course the Buds came out looking great. The Town Clubs not so much. But they are soaking out pretty well. Much better than I expected.

Pits galore out there...you wouldn't know it by looking at it....

This camp even has a horse shoe pit!

6 boxes of cans to come home with us...not bad considering...

Carl & Scott have most of the cans.... I took home the Town Clubs I dug to clean and the best of what I dug. We'll be splitting things up later. It is fun to clean cans and see how things turned out...

The cartoon series are the best ones and there's quite a story being told on each can. This one we call the "Sad Face" because its raining on his BBQ and his guest are running away....

That was a fun trip with great weather and camping spots. Saw plenty of deer and a coyote to go along with the sheep, cows, and elk herd. Our fourth day really saved the trip for us. Can't wait till next time.

I took 11 cans home with me to clean, while Carl & Scott will clean the rest. I found a pit loaded with killer gold Buds, 1 Hop Gold and 5 ratty Town Clubs. I had no idea how these would clean. I also brought home 3 Rainier Jubilees cartoon series that they gave me the OK to keep (pre-split). One of the cartoon series cans I dug was an actual misprint and Carl went nuts after it since many of the wind tunnel cans are misprints as well. This is one that got away and was actually filled with beer! I told him he could keep that one. I am pleasantly surprised how the Town Clubs cleaned up. I didn't bring home any gold Buds with me to clean, I let those guys clean them. Not sure why the Buds are so clean and the TCs have issues?? The TCs and Hop Gold are dated 1938 on the lids....

g_30s.jpg
Before cleaning - note the Town Clubs on the top row. The Hop Gold label was 2/3rd clean but I was wondering if it was faded the rest of the way, but I got lucky.

TC1.PNG
After the first dip in Oxalic Acid.... I have more work to do on these yet. More to come when Carl & Scott clean the rest.... hopefully this weekend!

Just like the old days, Hop Golds & Town Clubs.... I have no idea what that lo-pro ct was out of Scott's pit??? I'd also like to see how your Regal Amber Beer OIs clean up - same soil as the TCs! Plus take a photo of your mis-print Jube!

That's encouraging to see how the Town Clubs turned out. I'll try to get to mine this weekend as well.

The Hop Gold (copper lid) is dated: Feb 3, '38; and the Town Clubs are dated: 2 06 38. Since this was a hunting camp, I'm assuming these were left by Turkey hunters, probably in April or May of 1938 ?? Just a guess....

I have found them before from Florida but these are just the lousy Chicago ones..... thought they would still look good in the glory photos though - just to show variety....
