Had rocky mountain spotted fever in 2011 - avoid if possible. My T count has never recovered. Makes me want to cry.

Ticks are miserable in Michigan now. I always wear jeans and boots (literally every day) but starting Memorial Day weekend we started taping our jeans shut to our boots. How people can go dumping in shorts is beyond me. Gonna be even more careful this weekend, especially in the 90 degree heat.

Powassan doesn't "kill 15 minutes after bite". From the CDC:

"How soon do people get sick after getting bitten by an infected tick?

The incubation period (time from tick bite to onset of illness) ranges from one week to one month."

https://www.cdc.gov/powassan/faqs.html

Yes, it can be dangerous, if it develops into encephalitis. Yes, about 10% mortality if that happens. But MOST people don't develop encephalitis or meningitis, and in fact don't exhibit any symptoms at all. Some of you may have already been infected with this virus, and don't even know it.

MN Dept of Health says the same thing (MN is THE hotbed for this virus).

http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/idep ... asics.html

From your link, there have been 9 (that's right, 9) cases of this virus diagnosed in Maine...in the last 16 years. Not per year, but total.

You have a better chance of dying from sepsis from cutting yourself on a rusty can.

If you don't want people to panic don't post sensationalistic nonsense.

Will this news stop me from dumping in Maine this fall.....not at all....will it make me more cautious.....yes....I can't speak from a Lyme disease sufferer perspective but having watch what Angry Gary has had to go through I wouldn't wish it on anybody...I've been one of the lucky ones so far .....so again just a word of caution for others to take appropriate actions when getting out in the woods....

Not meant to be political at all.....simply meant that some would have interpreted the news "dead within 15 mins of the bite" as false or misleading....bad choice of words....

The tick-borne disease issue is nothing to take lightly. The prevalence of tick diseases is exploding. There are new diseases emerging that aren't even fully understood yet. Be overly cautious out there. For our recent Maine trip, I did a Permethrin treatment on my bibs and boots. I only wore the bibs a couple days though before it warmed up and I had to shed them though. I didn't treat any other clothes. Still a little leery on the Permethrin thing. Did a thorough tick check at the end of each day, and fortunately didn't find any the whole trip. In general I like to do my digging when there is still a bit of residual snow on the ground, before most insects emerge. Take this issue seriously, folks.

I found that the defense is to check your person after each dig or search for a dump. If you're still not sure if you have any riders on you, have your dumping buddy check you out right away. When you get "home" for the night, check yourself before and during your shower. Ticks are a pain in the azz in our hobby, and nothing to take lightly.
