A shameless bump with another pic. This is one of the Century concave bottom LP cones going through the last run of Exrust. I documented this can and it's cleaning with Exrust for a post in the cleaning section. Great can to dig!

The biggest thrill was for Murph to dig one out of the ground. That can was one of his most wanted, his old shelfer had a stripe of color 1/2" wide down the front. The new one has color all the way around the can. Just look at his signature now!

hey

thought I'd post some photos from the trip ... first shows an "unclean" Century

second photo shows the best (so far) of the brands that I've cleaned; but I believe the best cones have yet to be acid-dipped; just testing cleaning parameters right now

thanks again to Regan, Scott, Mike ... this is the second awesome dig that I've been invited to in the last few years, the other being the "Close-to-Home caper" with Dan and Brad near Taos ... thanks guys!!

steve T

P.S. the Century has a huge hole, but for a change it is not right in the middle of the label yeh!! the Schlitz has a hunk of rust hanging onto it ... maybe the hole from the Century? also of note, these cans were in the same pit ... does the time of issue for these cans make sense, or was this someone that cleaned up an area and buried all he could find laying around?

You going to the picnic on the 14th Steve? I'm finding Exrust is working really well with the rust still left from oxalic. Your Centurys will get a little nicer yet. Good to see them come out like that.

Here's another teaser to look at. This can is the worst of the bunch, not out of the mother pit. This can did, however, tell us that we were in the right spot if we just kept at it. MIke is sufficiently recovered from his surgery and Regan will be in town for the divvy and glory pix this weekend. Then the story for the Rustlings along with the tantalizing pix.
Mikes first SS.jpg
This one cleaned far better than we ever thought it would. When Mike found it, it was burnt & bent. There was one spot of color by the seam that told us what lied in wait...

Guys:

Scott and Mike both know I've been wanting an off-grade Century cone with color for ages and I probably mentioned it to Regan at some point as well. I pleaded back in Denver a few years ago to find me one. Somebody PLEASE trade or sell me one! There's lots of pre-war goodies in my totes for your viewing pleasure.

Great Pic.

So there it is, one of the great hauls for us in decades. For me, shelf cans are the Silver State, Century, 2 Miller variations, 2 Bud variations, and 2 Koenig Braus. Nothing like digging them for the collection! Will start the Rustlings story so you get the details of how cool a day we had finding these gems!

Here are my shelfers from RVD 4. The memories will last a lifetime!! The Koenig Brau quart is IRTP and still needs soaked. The Can-O-Pop Imitation BC is from Compton, Cal. First C-O-P I've found from there. Uintas are all different (including their first OI). No alcohol statement on the 12 oz IRTP Koenig Braus. 2 different Millers and Buds. Country Club and Grain Belt were both can-in-a-can finds (I actually called the GB just like Babe Ruth). And of course 2 of my favorite cans in my "I dug it" collection (and the only 2 cone top labels to ever come out of Colorado).

Allow me to ask this question - it is in regards to business models 101.

Does that many Silver States and Century's drive down the price and rarity of the cans? I have no clue how many are in circulation, and how many are willing to pay what has recently been paid for Silver States.

Just wanting to realize the been can economy of scale regarding such fantastic finds.

Thanks.

It's all a matter of supply and demand. The benchmark for dollars was set with Regan's ebay sale. That being said, how many more will be for sale? I know of 7 indoor, on grade examples of this can. One sold on ebay a few years ago for over $10k. After the divvy yesterday, each of us got 4 Silver States. For myself, 1 goes on the shelf. The rest will be TRADE only, I don't need the money. If the other guys decide to sell some, let the offers roll in. There are now less than a case of these available to collectors, and who knows how long it will be before more are found. The demand still outweighs the supply.

Well done Scott.

It was interesting in the Can show in Branson yesterday - some folks picked out cans and asked 'How Much/" I said, show me what you have and we'll trade. It was a foreign concept for some but one I enjoy.

Guess you could say I buy cans to trade them.

Thanks for the stats - better get to trading before the super dumping sleuth Dale publishes the gaggle of Silver States he is finding on his dumping Trek :smt023

Buying cans for trading is a great way to build a collection. Especially when you're going thru a dry spell and only digging 2 sided Coors. You just need to persevere (sometimes for decades) to dig a "holy grail" can. Besides, half the fun is the thrill of the hunt.

My 3 Silver State's will be for trade only and I'm in no hurry to do so after my surgery. My son has the SS that was on my shelf for at least 20 years. I think I'll sit on my split till next year when I'm back to normal. I will build a stack of all the traders from find and look at them every day.
