Barn Find!

#1

Post by ronsmall »

We take our kids to Chinese School on Sundays. One of the other dads there saw a shirt I was wearing, for Keith Norton's New England Show. He asked me if I collected old beer stuff and mentioned he had found some cans above the ceiling in his barn in West Hartford, CT. A couple weeks later he brought 9 cans in, and today, I went over and was able to retrieve 9 more, plus the caps from the Schlitz cones. Here's a picture of the cans, some which were found on top of a newspaper from 1941.

Image

I took some pictures of the cans before I moved them, but I had to use his camera since I forgot mine. So I have to wait until he emails them to me. This has got to be one of the best experiences in the hobby, finding cans that have just been sitting there for 65+ years.

Those should date before 1941, By 1941 should have been high pro bulb tops. Dates should range around early 37 to early to mid 39. LEON.

It just goes to show that good indoor cans can still be found even after all these years of collecting.

Too bad younger poeple are taking up the hobby. I'm afraid the bottom is going to fall out of the market one day.

Great job!!! I tell people all the time about my beer cans. All I've got out of that is a 24oz Bud can featuring Dale Earnhart Jr. I do appreciate it, even though thats not my collecting preference. It just shows that people are thinking about you, so maybe next time someone will bring something like you got. Great for you!!!

Hey Steve,

All four are beers. Weird thing for New England that all the cans are pre-War, and yet there were no ale cans.

Hey Ron,

I agree with scott, if you do not tell people you collect beer cans, then finds like the great one you made will never happen.

Here are a few I have received from friends. Makes up for all the aluminum World's Fair and Harley Davidson cans I have been given. The Silver Bar came from the attic of a house in Mulberry FL. I am sure there are more, but I relocated to Indiana before I could check with the fellow again. If anyone close to Mulberry wants to follow up, PM me.

Ironically, of the 3 Ballantine Exports that I dumped on a bullet trip to NY a few weeks ago, they match the bottom 3 Ale's you have! (obviously not even close condition wise!)
"Although the cans will be of no value after opened, their cost is expected to be small..." Iowa: June 22, 1935

Why drive 12 hour one way to dig Pre-Tax Tru Blu ales, Genny 12 Horse Longopeners, Gamecock Ales, Apollos, Neuweilers Bock, and Krueger’s Baldies when you can locally drive 10 hours round trip and dig Pfeiffer, Goebel, Drewrys and Strohs?

Well I got the photos from the guy with the cans and I thought I'd post them here. The area where the cans are laying is about 10 feet off the floor. They were too spread out to get many of them in the shot at once.
