I feel the same way with my Ronz Cone that you
helped me aquire. Sure would not win a beauty
pagent, but I love that can!!!! I grew up just 45 mi.
away from that Brewery(closed in 1958) so its always
been a personal favorite.

Very Tuff can to aquire by the way!! One of the few
examples where dumpers are harder to find than
Indoor cans. :smt017

Since nobaody has said how the can(s) were found, I will make something up to at least have something to read.

Last fall, a collector in northern Iowa entered a barn on a deserted farm in a heavy snowfall. After looking around, the collector pushed some boards off the entrance to the hay loft. It was dark, but once he shined his light up, he saw the bottom of some cans. As he approached them, he found 2 six packs of Class cans, 4 Tiger OI's, and 3 Autocrats. Also in the find were some 1950's Olympias.

So, this is the almost true story of the find. At least it is something to read about rather than, "its a secret."
You never know 'til it happens.

The quiet is not for maximum story impact, it's at the request of buyer and seller as someone mentioned above- to avoid having dozens of guys meddling in the deal. Unfortunately the pics and story were off to print before I heard of the third and rumor cans, so no reference in this story but hopefully there can be a quick follow-up. The story, running so soon, was actually barely tolerated but allowed so soon only because those involved figured word would be out by the time the magazine hit the newsstands. Randy, as 'winner' of the April/May round, gets my advance copy overnighted to him once I'm done reading it.

Not every can has to be sold to the highest bidder or most persistent pest, thank goodness that sometimes congeniality is valued higher. Sounds like at least one more will be available, anyway.

I've never heard why exactly the first Class was thought to be an air-filled prototype. Lilek announces it without making any explanation, and that needs to be revisited. Anyone here ever handle that can?

Menke, Kinda obvious why the Class was assumed a Prototype & others like it. Anytime one known indoor & not another dumper known people assume prototype or test. Just like they did with the Gold Seal cone until a dumper was found. If Air sealed to boot even more so, I disagree with this way of thinking, I think these conditions mean or prove nothing, all just assumptions. When & where did Lilek say this? Did not see it in his O/I Book Description of Class can? LEON.

P.S. I'm getting close, Chris better hurry up & get in here to collect his Grand Prize  Where is he? I know he's watching?

Think so? My guess you are doing enough watching and counting for all of us. Wow, for someone who really doesn't notice you sure seem to mention a simple post counter in many of your replies of late...

Leon-- its natural to think it is a test can. There are hundreds of test cans out there that are one of a kind. But they don't seem to command much value. An OI does, simply because there aren't as many of them and their status is unknown. Are you sure the Altes zip wasn't a test? And for God's sakes, will somebody put a zip lid on a tab and give one to Leon so I don't ever have to hear that name again?

Having never seen the can, my uninformed guess is that the Wally can evaporated just as can #2 did, and apparently #3 as well. Rumored cans #4 and #5, I know nothing directly about them. Having handled a collection full of partially and fully evaporated cans from high in a hot bar and seen a number of others with the same kind of history, this is definitely a classic slow evaporation can. The description I got on the phone of the #3 can also fits the mold. And if Joe or Wally had much relidding done then we've lost whatever information there was on can #1. And yeah, it's also possible the Wally can was a display empty, there were plenty of early OI's made for that.

As to Lilek and the unfilled can theory, the spiel is on page 183 of The Master Work (take one drink). It's a faux timeline of the Class can, with the patent info on the can, sale date fo the brewery, etc., and concluded most likely that it was a prototype passed along to Manhattan and never sold under Manhattan's ownership. I guess that's all possible, but probably far from the most likely scenario. I'd guess it's fiction. There are a number of instances in the book where there are wild stories that seem to prop up someone or other's opinion about a particular can, and we're never shown the reasons behind it.

Frankly, my first thought in hearing about more Classes was that someone was trying to scuttle the deal on #2 by unnerving the buyer about the cans' rarity, so that they might have a shot at it instead. But nothing added up to point to that, so I'm thinking there are indeed three to five out there at the moment.

Matt,

I have heard 3 and maybe a fourth, all had beer and leaked, found by different people in different locations. But I have only seen a picture of one. If 5 are found then I guess it makes my White Horse just as rare? ;)

Ajax-- that was an amazing find. Full cases, still cold, just sitting out in the woods without even any tarnish. When will they be hitting Ebay like all of the OI Class Pilsners that have now become target practice fodder?

if it was being kept a secret at the request of the buyer and seller, i am not believing that. i am believing more that the buyer is a board reader and the seller is not AND the buyer doesn't want any competition for the can. and i am really sure the buyer doesn't want any pesky people offering him more cash than buyer #1. you know how annoying it can be to have people calling you all the time offering you more cash than the guy who called 5 minutes ago.

Cansnatcher - I was told these were found in a wall of a deep-sea salvaged ship in anaerobic conditions, hence the lack of oxidation. The curators were able to remove the crustaceous debris micromechanically. The gold coins surrounding the cans helped preserve the ale which will be offered at BlueGrey next year with complimentary turnips and pre-pro pretzels.

Wow...I love that quart! It just goes to shows that we don't alway speculate correctly in this hobby. It also re-enforces that there are a lot of brands waiting to be discovered. I hope another Minnesota cone appears from one of the smaller breweries.

Don't know from Candomes - I'm still contemplating the pre-pro pretzels and turnips. How about corned beef and raisins on rice cakes for a main course? Squid a la mode for dessert?

Creative, Phil. Now you've got me inventing all sorts of new delicacies. I'm very into any post that can start with a Class can and devolve into this. ;)
