How do you display your cans?
How do you display your cans?
Do you alphabetize by brand name? Sort by brewery? Display only your favorites? Shelves? Pyramids? The old '70's can tree that scratches the crap out of cans?
I have a nice old lighted display cabinet with glass shelves and mirrors in the back, and only have room for about 50-60 cans at a time. I will store those that I get tired of or that lose their spot to something more exciting. No real order, except I keep brands together, but it is just kinda random.

Wow, cool bar!!! That looks like a fun place to pass some time...
The display cabinet is an 1885 Armoir from Belgium or the Netherlands, I think, that my late in-laws bought to display their antique glass collection. The door of the cabinet has a panel of glass instead of wood and it was fitted with shelves, mirror, and lights. When my mother-in-law passed away, my ex-wife was kind enough to let me have it, as she had no room for it and she knew I loved it. The cans look great in it. I will take and post a pic of the cabinet, but you can see a couple videos of the contents of the cabinet in the video section here. Brief grainy videos with my phone.
Getting this cabinet is what spurred me to go down in the basement and open boxes of cans that hadn't seen light of day in about 20 years, and to get back in the hobby, really!

I use shelves and display cases. I found the antique showcase for 250.00 at an antiuque store in Shipshewana In, and the Crowntainers are in an old Watch display case, the knobs are in a small antique curio, and the bottles/mixture are in a 79.00 barrister bookcase from Lowes. I also collect vintage cameras that are in another barrister bookcase. I like em cause they have doors and are pretty cheap. I just got a mission style case that will hold cans to.

I have mine in a glass built in cabinet in my kitchen, that used to have my ex-wife's china in. When she left, she never bothered taking them, so I just pushed them to the back, and put my Wisconsin cans up front. I love them there, I look at them everyday now, instead of them in the basement.

Can Displays
I display cans in order of what they are. The steel pull tabs and most off grade cones and flats are religated to the storage room with the Christmas decorations. Hinged shelves open like huge books to save on room and protect them from light. I display the nicer cans in the beer room. Half pints and flat tops serve as a border around the ceiling and the cone tops are on end shelves. Breweriana is mixed in all around.

Hey Gluek-beer-Dave...is that Fitger's Nordlager low pro cone full of gun shot holes? If it is I think I dumped that can (and about 5 others-all shot up) in late 1978 near Garrison/Bay Lake area. Cool display!

Hey Barry, Top picture, 3rd can down on the right just doesn't fit in with the rest of your collection. Thankfully, I'll take it off your hands - and even give you my downgrade!
Cheers!

Here is one pic of the way some of my stuff is displayed. The downside is that I don't have that many I can show off at one time.
One more picture. I had this display area put in when I had the basement finished last year just for this purpose.

These are great ideas - just what I need. Most of my tabs are now gone and I have 600 sf of room for my stuff (even the wife is on board - man). Plan a bar area, pool table, bathroom, frig, etc.
I do plan on having some walls covered w/ shelving for just cans; other walls will have various brewerian placed there. I will probably be posting some progress photos as the work moves forward under a separate post.
The only problem is that I have several areas of interest when it comes to cans and other beer stuff. I am tempted to group them by common themes. Each theme will have some cans, trays, signs, etc. Some of the themes are Colorado, NASCAR (just got a BUD #8 car pool light; KILLER), O/I cans, zip cans, NW stuff, Little cans, Tennent cans, tap handles, neon signs etc.
I am considering built-in shelves, or shelves that are more or less permenant (not adjustable). I want to max out my can wall - what kind oF clearance should I have?
Any advice or comments will be welcome.
stay tuned -
Michael

600 sf! Man I'd love to have room like that. My house is small, but paid for! It was perfect when I was a bachelor, but with a wife and stepson it's a little tight. Soon he's off to collage and I'll be able to reclaim my den.
My cans are displayed in the livingroom. It's the only wall space I have so I used 1/2 inch red oak for the shelves and 3/4 inch for the sides. I intended to have an extra row on top and bottom and an extra can width on each shelf, but the fire place (inactive) stone got in the way. My other display shelf is in front of our DVD collection. Ya, I know!!! A real crummy way to display cans, but I ain't got any choice for the time being.

I think most of you have seen my can shelves before.....nevertheless....this thread gave me an opportunity to update the imagemap of my collection. I've had a number of interesting additions recently and thought it might be a good idea to document them. Up to 538 variations now.

All those Buds in a line are giving me vertigo. The Goebels, though, give me warm fuzzies and remind me of the forest floor in the UP.
Rand, when you get all the variations together, what are you going to do next? Start all over again on the other wall?

This was a great post a while back. I thought I would resurrect it in anticipation of getting my room going (I have a contractor on board and will get started within the next couple of weeks). They will do the hard stuff and I get to do the easy stuff.
Over the years I have had the chance to look at how other collectors have displayed their items - they all look great. I have gotten some good ideas on how and where to put up the stuff.
Designing the room has been a challenge- figuring out where everything will go. There will be the wall(s) of cans, some neons, metal signs, tv, bar area, tap handles, pool table, fire place, etc. It really makes you think. This will be done mostly at once, so I want to be sure that I get it right.
I fugure out the best way to do the shelving is in 1/2" x 4', (most 12 oz cans being 4 13/16") fixed shelves with 5" clr. That makes about 5 1/2", including shelves - that works out something like shelf width + 1 can = 15.125 square inches. I also figure that I can get about 17 cans on each 4' wide shelf. (cans are 2 13/16" dia.) A little extra (1/16") will be allowed between each can.
So I figure that a 4' x 9' area will allow for about 323 cans +/- (19 shelves at 17 cans per shelf) - counting base trim, and posts.
Lighting will be a simple wash from the ceiling, minimal sun exposure.
Will post progress photos when they become available

Michael...I am currently finishing my rec/bar/breweriana room. Make sure you put a lot of nailer behind the sheet rock for signs. I also ran a line of plug-ins along the ceiling that are controlled by a light switch. This way you can turn on all your neon's at once without walking around pulling strings and the cords aren't hanging.
