New 1936-1937 Indoor Can find

#1

Post by Tavern Trove »

Well, some of you may have noticed Tavern Trove has been down now for four days and it's going to be down for several more - at least. If you are interested in the details I have posted them in the General Discussion area of this board . And If that mess wasn't enough to fill up my week and drain my bank account, I also flew back to the Midwest to pick up a nice collection of 1936 cones and flats. There were just over 200 of these cans and the find comprised several labels including about 40 black Grain Belts, "We Guarantee" Budweisers and a single 1/1+ Fritz Brew. I also have over 100 Low Profile Blatz cone tops spanning several variations. Here's the story of how the cans were found.

"Sonny" was a police officer in a small Midwestern town. He had been on the Narcotics Squad for about 30 years and he had many contacts in the local gang and drug community. He often worked undercover. Some of the local outlaws knew who he was. Most of them didn't.

One day about three weeks ago he got a call from a guy that he had hauled in and sent to prison years ago for dealing crack cocaine. "Mike" had recently been released and was on parole. He called because he thought his roommate had brought some drugs into the house. Apparently this roommate was careless and Mike was worried that the cops would come, bust his roommate, and by association bust him too. Mike wanted Sonny to come over and search the house for drugs.

Thirty years on the narcotics beat gave Sonny the experience to realize that Mike was using the drug sweep as cover so he could steal his roommates drugs. Nevertheless, Sonny went over to the house and did the sweep. There was nothing in the house so he went outside. The backyard was covered in undisturbed snow so he knew there was nothing in the shed. There were a couple of old couches on the back porch and he checked under the cushions - still nothing. In the garage there was an old Dodge Neon that looked like it hadn't been driven in 10 years. Sonny checked the car. Still nothing. Then he noticed that there was a hole in the ceiling where someone had removed some boards and he knew he was on to something. He climbed on to the hood of the old Dodge and peered his flashlight into the rafters.

Image

"Holy Crap," he thought and hopped off the car. "I didn't find anything" Sonny said to nervous looking Mike.

"Oh, Okay."

"Say there are a bunch of old beer cans up in your rafters, do you mind if I take them?"

"I don't give a f**k about no old beer cans!" Mike blurted, then reconsidered; "-How much are they worth to you?"

"I'll give you a hundred bucks for them..." offered Sonny.

"Yeah, Okay but get them quick - I don't want anybody seeing you here with me."

So Sonny grabbed a broom and started sweeping the cans towards the opening. "Come on man, wrap it up!" Mike pleaded from behind the mudroom door. Sonny had grabbed about a hundred cans but couldn't reach the rest.

"All right, I'm done," Sonny said and he packed up and drove home.

Sonny suspected these things had value and a quick check of the internet confirmed that suspicion. He called Mike the next day and asked if he could come over and get the rest. "Sure" was the reply "For a hundred dollars - and my kid wants Wendy's" Sonny showed up within the hour with a hundred dollar bill and a bag of Wendy's for Mike and his boy. After eating, Mike left the house with his kid, leaving Sonny alone to clean the last of the cans form the crawlspace.

According to Sonny's research, the permit for the garage was pulled in November of 1935. I imagine that the cans were left during some sort of christening party after the garage was built and the Pabsts and perhaps Old Heidelbergs were tossed up there a couple of years later during another party.

As far as I can tell there are 186 cans from early 1936 and another 15 from 1937. The breakdown is this:

1 Fritz Brew 1-1+, no U-Permit Number 4%
1 Meister Brau OI Grade 1- Patents Pending
1 Storz Lager Beer Grade 1 Patents Pending
2 Hamm's OI cans Lilek 375 Grade 1
5 Goetz Country Club cone tops Grade 1- to grade 1/1+
5 Budweiser "We Guarantee" OI Cans Lilek 139 Grade 1- to grade 1/1+
2 Budweiser Lilek 140 Grade 1 and Grade 1/1+
9 Pabst Peorea OI Cans "short opener" 1937 cans. Grade 1- to Grade A1+
7 Black Grain Belt "Minneapolis" Cans Grade 2+ to 1/1+
30 Black Grain Belt "Friendly" Cans Grade 2 to 1/1+
23 Heileman's Old Style cone tops Grade 2- to 1/1+
26 Blatz Old Heidelberg Cans (also 1937?) Grade 2 to A1+
6 Blatz Beer ("Select" in red) cans. Grade 2 to A1+
93 Blatz Beer cans; at least two varieties Grade 2- to A1+
Image

Give me a call if you are interested in any of these. I have the Fritz, the Buds, the Hamm's and nicer Grain Belts here, the rest are on a Fed Ex truck on en route to PA. There are no flat bottom cones in this bunch.

That's awesome, thanks for the story, Uncle Eric! Will we see these at Lebo's show next weekend? I love the time signature on the picture- talk about a midnight raid.

It all goes to show, one man's crack is another man's, um, drug of choice.

Oh crap. I just realized that I also live in a small Midwestern town. Guess I need to get to know the police force better.

Cans have arrived

The cans just came via Fed Ex.

It's nasty outside. Ther's at least 6 inches of sleet piled up on the roads and these guys are out there making deliveries. Fed Ex rocks!

Unwrapping

Post by Tavern Trove »

There are a few new dents but most of the cans made it just fine. I just uncovered this little surprise:

Image

Don't get too excited it's a grade 2- with an opener punch halfway through the sidewall of the can.

 WOW, Fascinating story, Living in the big city of Detroit I always Dream of making a find like this but never happened yet. I'm surrounded by thousands of old dilapitated Garages that could contain a similar find but getting access is hard. LEON.

OMG

Post by MikeS29 »

OMG I think I would have heart failure seeing all those cans sitting there...

I don't even DREAM that good.

The highlight of my indoor finds consists of about 6-8 cans from the late 50's or early 60's... coupla Ballantines (2 different labels) and some Shaefers, a PBR, Reihngold, Olympia.

Great condition, common cans.

Oh, to find an indoor pre-war jackpot! Dare I say, better than sex...?

What a cool story! I love the photo--just like the cans were left there in 1936/37 except for some dust and dirt.

And by the way Erik, I'd be interested in that Meister Brau! How much will you need for it??
