Johnny Pfeiffer cans

#61

Post by beercanman »

Randy,

Are you documenting any Pfeiffer paintover cans? I picked up a Meister Brau can under a Johnny Pfeiffer that's just waiting for me to rub it out. I plan on taking pics showing my progress, or lack of. The weird part about the MB can is there's some slogan on the side that I don't think I've seen before. It says something like "made with the finest ingredients money can buy" - won't know exactly until rubbed out, but it's definitely Meister Brau.

No current plans on documenting these. I haven't done much Michigan since pulling down my website, and have instead been spending time working on scanning magazine back issues and photographing California zips/tabs.

However, if you take some good before/after pics, I could likely include them with a link from the MBC yellow Johnny Pfeiffer pages when/if I rehost the MBC content.

How did you see the "made with the finest..." statement? We didn't spend too much time with that can at B/G, but just the right angle in bright sunlight I do agree that a Meister Brau variation. Maybe you have a can underneath that never did get filled, and might be worth taking this rubout real slow and careful, especially since the can is nice and clean, no dents, no rust.

You are correct, I bumped it up to 50 topics per page from 30. Hope this helps keep a few threads alive longer.

The paintover

Randy,

I made a deal with John Kretschmer, the owner of the can that I'd rub it out and we'd be partners in whatever was underneath the Pfeiffer's. That might have been a huge mistake ... we'll see once the can is rubbed out. I hate to jump the gun but I have a very good vibe about what's going to be unearthed.

Under the perfect lighting conditions when viewing at the perfect angle, the label just jumped right out at me. It's amazing when it happens. I had the same thing with the black Frankenmuth Bock cans when looking for the Pabst underneath (no, not going to rub that out, LOL). Only when everything was perfectly aligned was I able to see what was under there. I'd love to get photos of the underlying label before I start rubbing but I just don't think it's possible to photograph it. It's "almost" impossible to see it with the naked eye.

I'll take pics and see how it goes. I plan on taking my time with it. No hurry.

My Kamms J-spouts had a obvious Brockert under the paint, when held in certain light could be seen but just wasn't sure if it was the easy Pale Ale or Super Rare Porter? LEON.

Getting ready to go back to the Great Lake State this month so I figured I would bump this post back up.
Might as well add another question here too.

What would be the most underrated and overated Michigan Can:

Underrated- On-grade Alphine flat. Could be very wrong here but I never seem to see a really clean one around.

Overated - Frankenmuth Bock Flat.

Pretty good assumption. Indoor Alpines exist, but they sure don't turn up everywhere you look. I've seen nice examples (anywhere from 1/1- condition up through rolled and really clean) with pricetags between $150 and $650. The high end of that is bananas, unless you just really like rolled cans. I'd think that an all-original and G1 or better example could realistically, if not conservatively, be called a $250 can.

I also think the E&B Premium flat and the green Pat Henry Malt Liquors (Continental version is tougher, in my opinion) are also underrated indoor Michigan flats. The Premiums are sort of midrange as decent dumpers, fairly obtainable as ratty dumpers, and maybe just a cut below the Alpines in indoor shape. I think that's a really overlooked can - then, I'm partial to the design. I had that debate with Dave Launt over a beer once - I said it was one of my favorite Michigan flats, he made a face and said they're butt ugly! Honesty...that's why I love the man.

Indoor Pat Henry Malt Liquors (Grand Rapids version) from either can company are not easily obtained. The flipside to the Pat Henry label is that the brown Beer is ridiculously overrated as a clean can. People still seen to buy them for $350 - $400...big waste of money considering the known quantity of indoor specimens.

Overrated - I'd see your F-bock and raise you a Guinness. There are tons of clean ones out there, but with all the different lot numbers, they're all locked up in collections and never come out. If you equate value with known quantity, that makes these cans a BAD buy at $800 - $1200 apiece. Then again, if you're just desperate to own one, you might not have much choice. They don't loosen up and come into circulation frequently.

Depends on which Frankenmuth Bock your talking about. I see the Black ones get $1,200 while the Gold ones get $600. In my opinion the gold one is twice as tough (especially clean) & worth twice as much as the black one so the prices should be reversed on these 2 but thats not the case. Seems the Black one has more Eye appeal therefore twice the price even if twice as easy. Clean indoor Alpines got $300 10+ years ago & now 10 years later still seem to get the same $300 while that stupid black Frankenmuth went from $300 10 years ago to now $1,200? LEON.

I thought I would add an update to this thread......just picked up the Phoenix from "The Good Guys!"

The Goebel 16oz is a very tough sleeper can which rarely shows up as a nice all original example.

The Schmidts quart was very rare as an indoor can before the find of 15 examples about 7 years ago but is still a nice addition to any Michigan specialist collection.

As posted previously in this thread the Honer's J-spout is most often seem as a Grade 4 to 5 dumper but jumps quickly up to rarity status from Grade 3 or higher.
The pictured example is the best I've ever seen except for the one in the USBC.

It obviously is a tough still desirable can but from what I've read there may be anywhere from 15 to maybe as high as 40 clean examples and 6 to 8 dumpers.
Where is your dumper Leon...how about posting a picture.
Now the Goebel OD I would consider a much more rare can....maybe 7 or 8 known??

Here is a cool Phoenix advertising item....found this picture doing a google search.
