Blue Gray show is a go....Dates and details here

Passing this along from Charlie Smith:

I spoke to Lisa Allen a couple of days ago, she and Rich are going to try and carry on the Blue Gray show. The challenge is Ray was not big on taking notes, so most of the info and process related to how the show was run passed with him.

Right now Lisa and Rich are trying to figure out the contracts and support related to putting on a show, the hotel is holding the dates for a couple of weeks so they can figure out what and how to do this. If you can help with the logistics or how to please contact Lisa at Lisa.barrigan@yahoo.com

If I remember correctly the rusty bunch and the richbrau chapters did all the leg work a few years back to set up a new location in Williamsburg when Ray said he was going to retire from handling the show, but then at the last minute after angry Gary and crew had done all the legwork with a hotel in Williamsburg Ray decided that he wasn't going to retire from managing the show and decided to keep doing it. I was not there that's just what I overheard.

I truly miss seeing all of those guys at blue gray the last 2 years. The show has not been the same. The one at Fair Oaks Mall was pretty nice but I personally did not like the show last year; that hotel with the curved hallways was really not very nice for room to room.

Hopefully the Rusty Bunch and Richbrau chapters will get back involved this year; The show is not as great as it once was when they both had a big presence.

Well, that is my 2 cents. -Mark

This really is a touchy subject, but we should give Rich and Lisa a chance to see what they can do. I'm not sure the Richbrau Chapter and Rusty Bunch (mostly the same guys in VA) would want to try and coordinate a large show. If B&G does take a break for a year or two, I think the Richbrau Chapter is holding the Early March (1st weekend in March) show at the same place where the Monticello show is held - Best Western Zions Crossroads. It might be a good "fix" for some of us that can't wait for Spring Thaw.

Oh yeah, I agree with you.
I was just saying that I miss seeing all the people that used to be at the blue gray show in past years..

But then again I haven't been to a show more than 20 miles from my house in a couple years years so who am I to talk.

Well, there is a lot to say about this subject.
Rayner put on a good show for many years. And the work planning the show and making contacts was about 75% Rayner and 25% everybody else. For the last six years it's been Rayner about 100%. Cheers and Kudos to him for holding one of the premier breweriana shows for years.
At this point I would recommend taking a year off. It takes a ton of work to organize a show of this size, especially if one has not been previously involved in this undertaking. My thought is to turn the show over to the local chapters, Richbrau and Capitol City, and gauge the interest in retaining and organizing his show; after all Blue Gray began as joint two chapter show at the twin Bridges Ramada on the Potomac.
Let's leave it up to Cap City and Richbrau to see if they wish to continue the show; Rusty Bunch should provide input as well since they they have been a major contributor in years past. If we decide to continue the show the location then becomes the next issue. As a previous poster noted, there was a very detailed plan to move the show to Williamsburg a couple of years ago, and there was widespread support for the move by many local chapter members and Rusty Bunchers. (Thanks to Chris and Gary for a lot of work on that).
Spring Thaw has certainly grabbed the interest of the Rusty Bunch, myself included. I would rather attend that show than Blue Gray. But I think that Rayner wanted more quality items all along and was not as comfortable with the rust (as opposed to the Rusty Bunch members). It's probably the reason he was just as happy to continue with a smaller show.
My two cents. Amen.

The Richbrau show Tom is referring to is a show we ran in Zions Crossroads in 2015 and 2016. The first show had a great turnout and it was a very good show. The second year show a huge drop in attendance so we decided it wasn't worth the effort especially with Spring Thaw getting so big. So we replaced it with a day show at a local craft brewery which we are planning on doing again next year regardless of what happens with Blue-Gray.

The present proprietors haven't been boosters of the Rusty Bunch. But I live just the other side of the Beltway, so I went over last year with Menke. It's a can show, and at the end of the day, anyone's putting on a can show in my town, you know, thanks. I'm glad you did it.

Spring Thaw has been officially and spiritually the big RB show in the East for some years now. Long may it run.

Just wanted to pass this note along from Charlie Smith, BCCA President:

"Here is the bottom line....The Blue Gray show is showing signs of hope.

Lisa and Rich Allen backed out of taking over the Blue Gray show. When it looked like the show was going to be cancelled this year, Larry Handy has taken the reigns and the hotel sent him a contract for review (we can still get the rooms) and there is going to be a meeting on the subject this Friday."

I strongly suggest anybody who is planning on going to wait on a new registration form. I am not sure who is handling the registrations, but Kathy Johnson does not need a bunch of Blue-Gray registrations showing up on her door.

Some of us have registered and paid registration fee's already. This is a big undertaking for Larry by himself. Some of us will volunteer to help (Brian), I suggest we start a new tagged post on this as it will be important in the days to come.
