The Good Guys April Auction Is Now Over

#1

Post by Mizmo64 »

Hello All, Our April auction is now open for absentee/pre-bidding. We have had several people ask this time around about when the auction would be up and running. We also listen to customer feedback. It seems that quite a few of our customers think that running the pre-bidding for 30 days is just too long so we have decided to try to go with 10 days. What are your thoughts on this? Is 30 days too long? Is 10 days too short? Any input is appreciated.

Thank You!

I personally think 2-3 weeks is sufficient for pre-bidding

Sure.....I don't have much of an opinion on the prebidding......but do suggest that when you post an announcement about an auction opening up, that it might be to your advantage to also post the link along with it.

The only reason I would pre-bid would be if I'm working the day of the auction, and if I'm working at a facility where my phone service is poor. My pre-bidding would occur just before leaving for work. I approach an auction as I do a poker game - why show my cards before I have to?

Ten days is plenty in my opinion. Much longer than that and I start thinking of reasons to bid less than I initially thought.

I can say, without any doubt, the longer the pre bid is past about 10 days, the less cans I will bid on and at a lower price I will drop
out, with rare exception.

Interesting opinions so far. Show your cards. Don’t show your cards. Personally I like to know what’s coming up so I can decide where to spend my money. I’d say 3 weeks would be a good pre-bidding time. Thanks for asking Tom.
Thanks. Dave

I would vote 2 maybe 3 weeks max- Kinda tend to loose track beyond that as other things come up.

BTW the Rainier Not So Light is from our find of Rainier stuff c1980- That can was rolled by Chuck Foster. The sheets were 2 cans so one had the top corners clipped and the other the bottom corners clipped so they could be stored in the manila envelope the canning company had them in without poking their way out. That might be the best one we had which means it probably stayed in Texas when we moved... so I bet I could guess the seller.... Andy

Totally agree with Marc on this. Unless you have circumstances that limit your ability to live bid, why run the number up early and let everyone know just how much you are willing to pay? I don't get it. However, if your goal is to over pay for a can, it's a great strategy.

I like the 10 day format with the auction ending on a Sunday. That pulls two weekends into the process. 10 - 14 days seems about perfect to me.

While we're on the subject, it would also be nice if BCP would occasionally throw us all a bone and just post some cans for sale on their site with a BIN (buy it now) price. Just like in the good old days.

As a buyer I would rather see smaller more frequent auctions, too often with my can budget I pass on cans I really want in these long auctions to go after something later that I don't win. Weeknight auctions would be nice as well. But there are clearly plenty of guys with deeper pockets than me so not sure this would benefit the dealers and I am guessing there would be more work.

I also agree that I miss the days when nice cans would drop on the dealer sites as BIN, I used to check them every morning but now rarely even bother.

I typically do put a link on the announcements. I got sidetracked with the prebidding/absentee bidding question and totally spaced it.

Or load up the truck next week and go to Virginia? I enjoyed auctions more when they were infrequent, but there are always two or three running now.

Just scanned through the auction.

No less than 19 test cans, two of which are already at $$$ level.

There's 5 decent/nice vanity lid cans.

2 really tough 7oz Colt Beer cans, one flat, one zip.

9 Crowntainers!!! @jacoby4664

Forgot to add 22 Conetops!

This auction will be interesting...

I'm glad I'm not the only one. There's apparently some interesting psychology going on here. There's an auction ending today which has been running for a long time. I put eight cans on my watch list the day it opened, but I find now that I only care about two of them still and my opinion of the value has dropped 30-40%.

I was never a big fan of auctions, though these dealer auctions were a big step up from eBay. They have become so common that I'm burnt out on them. I guess I can't ignore them, but they don't excite me anymore. I haven't added a can for 6 1/2 months, and it's been twice that long since I bought one outright.

Fun auction for me as any higher priced cans I may be interested in were out of my range(or I correctly assumed they would be) so I could just watch the cheaper cans I liked. Won 4 cans including 2 Schmidt zips I needed, I need that Collie Draft too as mine is a drinking cup but someone wanted it more than me and one of those zips was pretty spendy. Anyway nice to see some Schmidt cans I need, I sort of hit a wall on those a few months ago, easy to get a lot of them quick but then they sort of dry up once you get to the tougher ones.

I was the 2nd place bidder on the Indian Zip. Hope you got it, appeared to be a very nice can.

Yes I won the Indian zip and I agree it looks like a beauty, I think the Indian is probably the most attractive of these cans. I like Riverboat and Ice Fisherman a lot too but the colors really jump out on this one, especially on the gold trimmed cans and minty.

Couple of cans I won in the April Auction. Guess I was into tabs on that day. Got outbid on a few others.

Ten days seems reasonable for pre-bidding. During that time, I can place a low opening bid. Doing so ensures I will get reminder emails for the cans I have an interest in.
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.
