Interesting Schlitz drawn-steel can

#1

Post by CrustyRusty »

More than likely not for real, but I'm still puzzled by this can, being drawn-steel and with the 1962 date and also a steel flat top, the top of coarse could have been put on, but the date doesn't fit for being drawn steel, doesn't look to be altered in any way, also where the holes were punched in the bottom it looks as though it did contain beer before being pierced. Also the height is the same as other all original 12oz cans.

The wording between the labels is different than on any other Schlitz can I can think of. I'm not sure if it was "supposed" to be drawn steel, but it sure does look like a test can of some sort. The 1962 date also doesn't go with the fact that there are no silver or gold bands at top or bottom.

I have a very similar can. Mine is almost the same, but with white trim rather than silver. Bottom is white, too. I don’t think they’re fake or fantasy cans. I figured mine was a test can, but just speculating.

Drawn steel came out earlier than I thought. Odd that Wisbeers can has a painted bottom. Cool can!

Very cool, nice to see that there's another out there, I rolled the dice on mine on an eBay listing, when I saw the 1962 date and it being drawn steel, I knew it had to be an odd-ball, I hope there may be more info out there regarding this can. Yours looks quite odd with the white bottom, I don't recall seeing any drawn steel cans like that other than yours you've shown here with the bottom painted. Looks like they're keepers.....

Schlitz did a lot of testing, possibly more than any other brewery! Six+ pages of test cans in the book. My ‘62 drawn steel like Crustys’ is a bank. That is a very cool can, Tim!
I’m not familiar with canning plant 083’s location. Ziphippie

The 083 can code is found on many of the late 60's Tivoli cans. It's the American Can plant in Omaha NE.

My recollection on this is from conversations on the other schlitz test cans that came out with old labels and dates that didnt match to the type of can.
The design and plates from old cans were used on newer types of cans to see what the designs looked like on the newer types of cans.
By doing this, the dates are off on the schlitz cans. The brown schlitz aluminum test can for example I believe had a 40s year on the mandatory.

These drawn steel Schlitz cans are legit test cans but I believe tops may have been added later on some of them.
Looking for Waukesha beer, water & soda; cans, bottles and signs.
