A surprisingly cool thing on Ebay- Brewery families

#1

Post by hemmings »

My Ebay activity has noticeably increased over the last year and a half or so and one of the really cool things that has happened I thought was worth mentioning.

In the last year or so I have sold things of the same name to people named: Hohenadel, Hupfel, Haberle, Gluek, Fauerbach, and Ziegler that I can think of... Feel like I am missing two or three more too. I've been able to strike up conversations about family brewery history with most of them.

Curious if others run into brewer family members very often this way? Andy

I haven't sold to anyone of a brewery family but I've bought a good bit from a certain brewery family...

Funny you brought this up; I have had a few sales on eBay over the years and thought the same thing. Most recent was below Ortlieb’s can to a guy in Philly named William Ortlieb:

I have sold to William Ortlieb too. Also some of the Gretz family members.

We are supposed to be related to the Ziegler's one way or another. I have one family postcard that was sent to a Z from the brewery family so maybe... I sent along several Ziegler labels too just for fun.... BT, I'd bet its the same H. person... can't be that many can there be? Andy

Andy, while the brewery I collect has long been out of business, one of the families that started it,Thieme, is still around and even opened a bar in downtown Lafayette. I've bought Lafayette brewery stuff from Mr. Thieme.

My situation was reversed. In the early days of eBay, I was competing for Fesenmeier pieces with a member of the family.
Always looking for Bock Beer Cans - 1 or 100, mint or dumper.

Jim- where you able to share information with them at all?

Bodean that is awesome. I can add Trommer's to my list now.

And finally, I just realized I had found a free range Ziegler postcard (not from within my family)- sent to Louis Z's daughter Ottolia about the time she married brewer Reinhold Ruedebusch.

My wife and I have a friend whose last name is Bock, and she was from the Griesedieck family. Can't remember if it was her maiden name.
