Great topic. Only one is tough. I chose an OH can, R10/R9 according to Lilek, nice condition too.

This is a tough challenge! I have several unique cans (Pearl Bock Mock Up, White Southern Select Crown with battleship gray spout, Pearl embossed Waterfall can, Grand Prize foil label from Minneapolis, 3 Shiner Mock Ups for their first can and a few other test type cans with less than a half dozen known)... The Travis Dark that I have in my collection is the rarest regular can as it's the only one I've held (there are a few others out there including at least one minty example). Fun Topic!!

For me, anything west of the Mississippi is tough. This would have to be my toughest and proudest pickup.

Re: What Is The Rarest Can In Your Collection?
My rarest Canadian Beer Can would be this Dow, as far as I know it is one of two....
Two things make this can different from other Dow CT's, there is no "net" before the contents 12oz and this mandatory along the seam, STAY SAFE!
A picture of one of these appeared in an early Beer Can Reference book (one I don't have, anyone know which guide it is?) but for what ever reasons it was omitted in the 1984 Foreign Beer Cans guide by Jeff Cameron. I was able to trade for this one locally and from what I've heard the one that was pictured in that early guide is residing in a collection in the mid west. Two things make this can different from other Dow CT's, there is no "net" before the contents 12oz and this mandatory along the seam, STAY SAFE!

Re: What Is The Rarest Can In Your Collection?
I don't know about mint, but there are a few nice examples out there. A collector from Houston dumped 5 or 6 SS j spouts when he was a teenager and put them away with the rest of his collection. Fast forward 20 years, he rediscovered them and brought them to the Shiner show a number of years ago. They are grade 5-, but they are SS j spouts. Most of the hard core Texas collectors, like myself, were able to pick one up.
Steve - isn't the Southern Select J-Spout rarer than a Travis? And unknown in mint?
As for either one of the Travis', they have never been found in any quantity and there are not many out there at all, clean or dumper.

I upgraded from a 5- to this one perhaps 15 years ago. It came from eBay, and the seller said he dug 11 of them many years ago.Longhorn Mike wrote: ↑Wed Dec 16, 2020 1:49 pmI don't know about mint, but there are a few nice examples out there. Re: What Is The Rarest Can In Your Collection?
Very difficult to pick one can from many rarities. I also collect craft cans from Maine that I have had the pleasure to purchase and drink, so I know that I probably have several unique cans that avoided being top-opened and then crushed in recycle machines to get the 5 cents deposit.
Anyhow I have the Krueger Cream Ale (Lilek 464) that was believed to be unique. Anyone else have one?
Also pictured are two more of the first Old Tankard Ale (Lilek 614), that was also believed to be unique. I am keeping them both because the rust is too intense and both are needed for the details.

Nice pinball table, is it still operational? May want to run by the bank and cash those checks. As they say "you can't hide money"!

Yes, the pinball machine works great. a 1965 Teachers Pet. The checks are shipping charges from selling the Dave Launt collection, so not big bucks.

While a super tough can to be sure.....they do turn up. Most folks just don't recognize the missing "in bottles or on draught" statement. I found one just lounging around Mike Wilbur's tote, unmarked in Watsonville 11/2/13. My poker face sucks....so when he saw me freak out, the price shot WAY up. Still got if for $40 though :-)oldindiapaleale wrote: ↑Thu Dec 17, 2020 2:34 pmSo that would make the can in the book (yours), mine, plus the two the guy would not sell you. Re: What Is The Rarest Can In Your Collection?
I rate the Primo, any Pilgrim and the early Red Tops up there with the finest of the big goat Bocks. Kevin Lilek enjoyed a good debate and we had many while he was putting his books together, but I was unable to convince him that he had the early Red Tops sequenced incorrectly. The enamel cans had to be first, but even the discovery of the metallic supplement can 718A didn't convince him and I consider that a smoking gun. I was able to get a nice (but relidded) metallic 718 after Gene Judd passed on it, and I learned later that Gene's shelf can was 718A. I love the can, but it didn't sate my desire to add the enamel can.
The Frederick's J-Spout is a prime example of why I started specializing in J-Spouts, plus it looks 20 years older than any other beer can.
The first Old Tankard Ale is way high on my list too. Kevin Lilek specialized in Pabst, and the photo below is the trade offer he made when he acquired the book can.

Re: What Is The Rarest Can In Your Collection?
Ed - I have held a couple of on grade Southern Selects plus the dumpers that showed up at Shiner 15 years ago. I chose the Travis Dark as I believe it is considerably tougher than the Southern Select or the Travis Extra Pale (although that one consistently brings over $20K when available on grade).Cap-Sealed wrote: ↑Wed Dec 16, 2020 7:36 amSteve - isn't the Southern Select J-Spout rarer than a Travis? Agreed that the Krueger small opener “On draught” only turn up for sure. Matt Menke has turned them (Maine I believe) as well. Re: What Is The Rarest Can In Your Collection?
When I first posted on this thread, I said I had a couple of choices and went with the first Old Tankard Ale, which based on replies and pics, seems to be runner up (at least 5 more known including the one pictured in Lilek’s book) to the other choice I had picked out.
So I am changing my decision and going with the Patents Pending, large “KEGLINED” Esslinger’s Bock. Certainly not in the same category condition wise with my Old Tankard but apparently the more rare of the two cans.

Very cool plus confirms beyond a reasonable doubt that this was a production can as opposed to a test can. (like the Gold seal from Oklahoma)

Besides my partial Apex cone, this has to be my rarest can.
