My Sporting side

#1

Post by Tinman »

I've been a hockey fan ever since I can remember, then when I was about ten years old my cousin Roger Crozier made to the
NHL and ended up playing for the Detroit Red Wings for about ten years. He went on to play for Buffalo and finnished his
playing career with Washington in the early 70's.

I became a Red Wings fan in the mid sixties and have remained so ever since, although this past season was a bit of a tailspin.

Can you believe my son and I were talking about something tonight, and whose name came up but Roger Crozier! It's kind of a dim memory but I do remember him playing goalie for the Red Wings and Sabres. Cool bit of telepathy here!

Roger Crozier - Now there's a blast from the past! I remember he was the goalie after Terry Sawchuk. I had to look up his stats and found this on Wiki.
Roger Allan Crozier (March 16, 1942 – January 11, 1996) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who played fourteen seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Detroit Red Wings, Buffalo Sabres and Washington Capitals. During his career, Crozier was named to the NHL First All-Star Team once, was a Calder Memorial Trophy winner, and was the first player to win the Conn Smythe Trophy while playing for the losing team in the Stanley Cup Finals. He was the last goaltender in the NHL to start all of his team's games in the regular season, in 1964–65.
Thanks for sharing this.

These ones? Even though they weren't sold here in Canada they do show up at our shows, I'll keep an eye out.

He also had the shortest coaching career, one game for Washington.

Of course I collected all his cards,

The season never ended so its not officially a tailspin but hopefully they win the draft lottery. Red Wings fans always missed out on that excitement.

spire64- I figure you probably have Hockey theme gallon cans. That hockey goalie mask look like came from Jason (Friday the 13th).
I think, I believe they came out 2 different version hockey goalie mask. One that you already posted, and there is a modern style face mask. I know Molson Canadian and Labbats make those Hockey gallon cans.I don't know how many set are in there. Not sure if U.S. ever made Hockey theme gallon cans. I remember, when I attend the Canvention ( Milwaukee, my first one) I have seen alot of hockey gallon theme cans. So, hopefully, the Canvention this year is open and I'll keep an eye on one of them.
Thank for sharing the photo and your side collection.

Yep it sure took it's toll on their health, Roger had his first ulcer by 17, In his very first NHL game
he was hit in the face with a puck, fortunately it was the flat side of the puck and ONLY broke his
cheek bone and was able to continue to play.

I went through my scrap book and found a few other pictures from his early years.
RC bunch.png
A few years ago I posted a picture of this light up sign asking if anyone recognized the dude.
http://www.therustybunch.com/phpBB3/vie ... =1&t=38768
Mr Pils.png
I had picked it up at antique mall close to Rogers hometown and when I saw this tag I had to have it.

The reason I was inquiring on who it was is because I knew he had spent a lot of time in the USA.
Mr Pils tag.png
The "Working" light was a 40w bulb that illuminated his feet and nothing else, so I installed another light
that lights up the rest of him.

These are pretty much all the hockey themed 5 liter cans that I'm aware of. They were put out by Molson and Labatt's in Canada and the USA.
There is a couple that are not pictured, both are in the photo up in my first post.
24 Hockey Bubbas.png
I haven't seen any of the modern types mask on a 5 liter but I have seen them on 473ml and 355ml cans here in Canada. I'll post them
as I get to that part of my side.

Thanks, I have a couple scrap books from this era full of those type of pictures that I saved from the Toronto newspapers,
This picture always catches my eye every time I start leafing through them.

I don't think any of these pucks ever took a tooth or left a scar, The Dow is an award and never was intended for use.

Yeeouch!!… Deflection? Several defencemen I played with over the years took a puck to the face but none
that broke bones, by the time I was strapping on the pads to face pucks (played more ball hockey then ice hockey
as a youngster) these masks were the protective equipment we wore. I had one crack just above the right eye but
no stiches.

To continue with my side, here's the Canadian teams that were on the 5 litre cans, The picture is from
late 20's

Here's my pyramid of Canadian Olympic hockey cans, the lower ones are other Canadian Olympic cans.

The season is over for the Wings and I can't imagine there's much excitement in the motor city with the outcome of the draft lottery, on the bright side the last time the Wings had the fourth pick they picked some kid named Stevie Yzerman and that turned out pretty well with a couple cups and many years of playoff hockey.

They had an amazing run of winning seasons and playoffs (25 when only the top half got in not the top 2/3) Now they get to start building again which could eventually be exciting.
