Just spit balling here but I don't see why flats, or OIs, or cones, or whatever specialty should be done. I prefer something more broad based. In lieu of being outside we can use our cans to get us there. So here goes....

Since so many cans have graphics on them, how about a four seasons type bracket. 16 summer cans in bracket A, 16 spring in B, autumn in C, winter in D. Type of can is irrelevant. Gallons, tabs, flats, whatever, they just get sorted and placed in a bracket. That way each season will be represented in the final four.

I'm not certain how to distinguish a summer scene from a spring one but we'll figure that out. Hey, maybe its just me but that's my $0.02

Uh -- what's the vote about, though? Are we voting for the

-- rarest?
-- most attractive?
-- item we'd most want to own?

Last year (I think) we had an ugliest can contest. It was agonizing -- I see St. Urho's in my dreams -- but nobody needed instructions.

I would like to see a Best Retro Can competition.

Retro Can idea is good, I think the Breweriana one would be best looking, Not based on value. Like if you had 64 items in front of you and and no idea on value, the coolest one , best looking, the one that makes your big toe shoot up into your boot !

My thought of doing non-OI's was designed around the idea of creating a larger group of potential winners than we'd have if the Bock OI's and cans like Class and Tiger were included. I thought it would be less predictable and more interesting.

As for the Ortlieb's Bock Ale - I'd vote for it if the criteria was "can you want to upgrade most", but I wouldn’t vote for it as rarest or best looking.

How about an all Cone Top tourney?
Open to low-pro hi-pro j-spout crowntainer quart pint US Canadian foreign irtp non-irtp etc.
Maybe 4 open regions of 16, so that the final round could have 2 quarts or 2 crowntainers battle it out.
Also have nominees from actual cans in collections not just pictures from the USBC.
Vote winners from "favorites" instead of toughest or rarest.

The Ortlieb's would be in the Bock side. Insane Federal labeling laws require anything over 5% I think to NOT have the word 'beer' anywhere on the label. You buy a nice Oktoberfest and the label says ALE in small letters because it can't be 'beer,' though I'd gladly trade you a Samichlaus for a sixpack of session IPA any day.

Anyway, they wanted to make a bock beer but couldn't call it that. hence the ale. If you were trying to make an ale that was bock, we'll that's technically impossible. My .02. Plus, the goat kind of seals the deal.

Are there 64 different sets? I would think so once you included 70's stuff like Iron City, Schells,Frothingslosh, Andy's, bicentennials, those Huber brewery cans, etc but 64 is a big number. This may one of those things where we already know the final 8 or 4 though.

@ConeAddict
As someone with an affinity for set cans, I'd like to provide the following info.

There are at least 62 defined Flat Top Sets. This is based on the @Beercanpete article.

FLAT TOP SET LIST.pdf
(78.06 KiB) Downloaded 35 times

I had a rough list of Tab Sets for my own use. There are 109 or more possible sets. Even if you remove the 2 can groups, you still have 91 possible sets of three cans or more.

TAB SET CAN LIST.pdf
(95.15 KiB) Downloaded 29 times

The definition of a set is arbitrary and totally up to the collector.

That's crazy, I had no idea there were so many. Some of those tabs I wouldn't count and for a tourney I would count longs runs of different but same sets like Schmidt cans only once but there are still plenty. Seems worthy of a tourney, if nothing else for the fun of gathering pictures of complete sets where possible in one thread.

I would like to throw another note of support out there for Breweriana that features a can.....That could get really interesting!. If not that, then lets just do cans with the name of the can below the center :-)
