Glory pic thoughts

Post by StL ABC »

I got to thinking about how much enjoyment we all get from viewing the "glory shot" of others digs/finds. Over the years Bob and I ("Excellent Adventure Team") realized just how important these photos are and we put special effort into them. Some thoughts ......

When possible, we include ALL the cans from the dig or digging trip in the group shot before splitting them up. If one guys cleans and photos them, divvy can be done later. Multiple "take home" pics from multiple team partners are cool too. I like it when Bob uses his front step as a backdrop. There is an entire series of shots that become immediately recognizable as a single body of work because of it. On occasion, cans are kept and cleaned solely for their ability to enhance the glory shot. An otherwise worthless can with a clean side panel can be displayed to show variation. Common cans are often included in the photo to provide some context then discarded after the divvy. Larger finds include multiple shots of multiple groupings. Sometimes we separate brands, cones, special size and cones ( mostly for stacking reasons), pre and post war, sometimes not. There is always a "highlights" shot that includes specially selected cans based on their condition and/or brand. I really like when all the brands are mixed within the shot. My favorite example of that was a trip to Oregon that included myself, Ed S, Dale B and Dan B. We scored Silver Springs, Hop Golds, Town Clubs and more then cleaned and divvied them at Ed's house. Maybe he can post it here.

Here's another glory pic...this one was a Brookdale California Show & Dig in 2005. Alaska Chris, Bill Lindstrom, Tom Inman, Curious George, Mike Wilbur and myself.

When you take a glory photo, it memorializes the trip. You can remember all the fun you had, how hard it was to find stuff, the "moment of discovery", where you went and who you were with.... you could take it one step further and write a RUSTlings story about it too.

Also, I take glory pix of all the cans I bring home from a show.....

Andy, I personally like glory shots for all the reasons stated.

If people post a single example of each can it doesn't "prove" the number of examples found. It's sort of like fishing or hunting pictures...showing a single pike or huge perch and then saying later "We caught the limit!" just becomes a tall tale unless there's photographic evidence.

For those who like provenance, you can often times match up a dumper in your collection to a can in a glory shot by rust or damage.

It also helps in numbers of a label known...if a find isn't photographed as a whole, the "proof of numbers" and rarity of a label is lost to the ages.
"Although the cans will be of no value after opened, their cost is expected to be small..." Iowa: June 22, 1935

Why drive 12 hour one way to dig Pre-Tax Tru Blu ales, Genny 12 Horse Longopeners, Gamecock Ales, Apollos, Neuweilers Bock, and Krueger’s Baldies when you can locally drive 10 hours round trip and dig Pfeiffer, Goebel, Drewrys and Strohs?
