Detroit North Star metallic gold variation
This can just surfaced on ebay recently and seeing the word "Detroit" along the seam, I quickly hit the buy it now button.
I have seen quite a few Detroit North Star's over the years, mostly off grade with the occasional on grade example and can't recall ever seeing one
with metallic instead of the usual enamel gold. Canning code is 68A.
One is not pictured on Mr. Karasek's most awesome Michigan beer cans website, unique? overlooked?

Re: Detroit North Star metallic gold variation
That's an amazing price for a North Star from Detroit. I will check the canning code on mine when I get home.
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

Re: Detroit North Star metallic gold variation
Every example I've ever seen of this can is the enamel version. My can is enamel with code 68 A. Nice find.

Re: Detroit North Star metallic gold variation
I just looked at Dan Morean's upcoming auction and he has a Detroit North Star flat listed lot #55 as an unlisted ENAMEL version?
I thought the one listed in the book was enamel?

Re: Detroit North Star metallic gold variation
I thought they were all enamel, and only difference in the two pictured on my website is very small canning code difference. I do seem to remember a list somewhere (maybe it was Kevin Foley's) that mentioned enamel vs metallic, but I never saw the metallic version when I was taking photos. Nice find.

Re: Detroit North Star metallic gold variation
I just looked at the online USBC book, and the book example Detroit North Star flat is clearly enamel. Mr. Morean is clearly mistaken.Onefineday wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2020 9:16 pm I just looked at Dan Morean's upcoming auction and he has a Detroit North Star flat listed lot #55 as an unlisted ENAMEL version?

Re: Detroit North Star metallic gold variation
Nicely done. I flip those North Stars hoping to stumble across the Detroit variation. No luck so far.

Re: Detroit North Star metallic gold variation
I've decided to let this can go as I don't collect Michigan cans anymore. It's currently listed on ebay along with a nicer off grade Lucky Sparkling Ale, and a nice and super tough Frankenmuth Old English Ale yellow oval.

Won't be live for a few more hours, until the ebay police survey my use of the word "beer".

Re: Detroit North Star metallic gold variation
Just a reminder that the above mentioned cans are ending around or shortly after 9 p.m. eastern time. Also listed a bunch of off grade cones.Onefineday wrote: ↑Thu Jan 30, 2020 10:24 pm I've decided to let this can go as I don't collect Michigan cans anymore. Re: Detroit North Star metallic gold variation
When I first listed this can on the bay I thought what would I have paid for it when I was heavily into Michigan cans, and I came up with $500, then cut that in half for an opening bid for a possibly one of a kind Michigan can variation of $250.
Much to my surprise, the can went without a bid. The days of the Michigan can specialist seem to be a thing of the distant past, at least the "rabid" variety of Michigan can specialist.
I have decided to list this can with no reserve, the bid is still quite low for such a rare can, if there may still be 1 collector of the "rabid" variety left, you are most welcome to bid.

Also the Lucky Sparkling Ale can I had previously sold, then relisted is currently back on for round 2 of bidding with no reserve, a few other cans listed this week as well.

Re: Detroit North Star metallic gold variation
I wish I could see a metallic and enamel version of this can side by side. I am having trouble understanding this. In pictures, the can above looks enamel to me, not metallic. My can, shown below, looks metallic to me but logically, it must be enamel because if I understand correctly, that is the more common version. Admittedly, the condition of my can complicates things.
I got my can from Leon. It used to be in better condition but it was a victim of moisture in his basement. He bought a nicer can from the Good Guys last summer in Frankenmuth and then sold this one to me along with a Fox Deluxe GR 12 oz. cone.

Re: Detroit North Star metallic gold variation
It does appear as you say. I would say the worse condition can looks metallic to me.
