Trying to narrow down some dates for taller 12oz cans. We were thinking it was 1978 when Schlitz Light and Stroh's extruded steel cans were referenced as brand changes in the BCCA magazine.

That sounds about right to me, but if you are trying to be very exact I'm not real sure. I know some Schlitz cans (not other brands) that were crimped steel and tall have a 1977 copyright date, but no dates later than that on anything.

What about tall Coors cans? I seem to remember my dad having those in the mid 1970's.

Also, I found some tall Goebel cans at my girlfriends, dad's, cabin in 1978 or 1979. Si that would match up with the 1978 date above.

Here is some info from the BCCA magazines. Seems like Coors and Strohs Goebel a bit earlier, Schlitz Primo before Schlitz Light, and then Strohs/Strohs Light.

The original tall 12oz cans were the Fredrick's, Ambrosia and Golden Armor in the late 30's or early 40's. However, the reintroduction of the tall 12oz cans was 1977. This coincides with the Coors and Schlitz / Schlitz Light / Schlitz Malt Liquor / Old Milwaukee cans. I'm surprised that the tall Primo's were out in 1978 because the Honolulu brewery was not closed until 1979.

I have a photo below from the the MillerCoors corporate website that confirms the 1977 date. I also have a couple of tall Lone Star test cans who's label coincides with other Lone Star designs from 1977.

However, the wild cards are the tall, straight steel Falstaff and Ballantine cans. I am not sure if they predate 1977 or not.

I started collecting at the end of 75, so say 76 and I am almost certain Strohs and Coors were available in tall cans then in 1976 but that was a while ago.

I started collecting in 1974 and my very first can was a tall Coors

1978 is a pretty good year to go by for most of them. My childhood collection started in late 1977 and I think the Schlitz ones just started coming out around that time.

The tall Falstaff that I have is the pre-bicentennial design with the gold writing. I don't think those are real common- at least, I haven't seen a lot of them. Mo

Have to look at my other tall cans when I get home to see if there are any dates or clues on them.

Stroh's was in tall extruded steel cans by 75 at the latest, and probably late 74. I didn't drink Schlitz so I can't comment on that.

How many of you got their start collecting cans from picking up the cans and selling them for the aluminum? It was 24 cans to a pound and I could get 10 cents a pound then--I was real happy when it went up to 15 cents. Anyway, I can remember taking a couple big bags to a Pearl distributor in El Paso, TX and getting 95 cents--not bad for a kid! I am almost certain it was 1973 because of where this was located. Sitting on a shelf in the building was a tall Falstaff, and I asked for and was given the can. So I am pretty sure the tall Falstaff/Ballantine cans were around in 1973. And, I am almost certain the tall Coors were out for a few years before that. I was picking up cans in 1973 and moved to El Paso in 1971, and I have no memory of the 11 oz. Coors cans in 1971. So my guess is they were out by 1971.

Oh, and Longhorn Mike, those are really cool tall Lone Stars--never saw those before!

This a picture of my collection on my first day of collecting beer cans. A buddy and I rode our bikes around picking up cans on the side of the road. It is dated June of 1976. You can see a tall Coors and Stroh's in the picture.

The very first can I collected was a tall Goebel (I'd never heard of it, I was eleven, I thought I had something exotic) in the summer of '77. I see Danny's note down below dating them to '75. I also remember tall Coors pre-'77.
