Question about Sunburst Hamm's Tough or Common

#1

Post by beerhunter14 »

I was talking to somebody at the GnT show ( Guzzle n Twirl ) over the weekend . Discuss about the variation of Hamm's cans. Some are Tough than other. I got this can at the Gun Show early this spring. This can say "Refreshing" I normally thinking it a west coast can. But I look where it made it say " Brewed & Packed Theo Hamm Brewing C0.
St.Paul, Mn. It has Virginia Stamp on it. It has the canning company T.H.B Co. with a code 82-A .
I have 2 question about this can. What is T.H.B. stand for ??
Is it Tough or Common can ????

Pretty sure the T.H.B. Co. on can stood for Theodore Hamm Brewing Company. LEON.

I have dug this can in Maryland and/or Virginia. It could be a design Hamms introduced into national markets when they realized that "from the land of" could not be used on Hamms cans originating in places not St. Paul, such as the Maryland or California or Texas breweries. Just speculation on my part but Hamms could have been moving away from the "land of sky blue waters" slogan in order to expand their national marketing.
Not tough, just an interesting variety.

Charlie, I am going to have to disagree with you in the toughness. Being someone who collects all the variations on Hamm's cans that one is one of the tougher ones. I got mine from John Stazkal (Sorry John if I misspelled your name John) and it is the only one I have ever seen. I have turned over a trillion Hamm's sunshine cans and you never see that can. The ones from San Fran and LA or pretty easy but not the refreshing from St. Paul. If you know of a dump with them in it let ,me know and I will take a road trip.

Charlie is probably referring to the ones from Baltimore rather than St. Paul.

Now this is getting interesting . I forgot about Baltimore and never knew they have the word " Refreshing" so I assume that is 1 of the toughest of all follow by St.Paul. I may be wrong on this one.
Other interesting note. what Leon pointed out about the can maker ( I made a mistake as I said company ). - Theo Hamm Brewing. I don't think it that . After digging more information If you look carefully T.H.B. and have circle with a R in it. So I dig up some information from the old Bible beer book. Could it be Heekin or Reynolds ?? I may be wrong on this too.

Heekin was a H Symbol within a Circled if I remember right. Reynolds was more of a Aluminum can co like Alcoa. Could R be for Registered. LEON.

P.S. The 82 A almost looks like a American can code?

T.H.B. is Theo Hamm Brewing. This is a tough can to find or acquire....you'll see many REFRESHING from LA,San Fran or Baltimore, but rarely will see one from St. Paul.

There seems to be an exception to every rule. Normally "Refreshing" is reserved for Hamm's cities other than St. Paul, except for this can.

Conversely, "From" is reserved for St. Paul. However, there is a bottle label from Houston that says "From". It is pictured next to the more common Houston "Refreshing" label. All of the cans from Houston say Refreshing.

However, the rules don't not seem to apply to Hamm's Draft. They all say "From" no matter what city they are from.

Thank guys for your input. Interesting Hamm have their own can maker. Compare to the west coast they use Kan-Keg ,while in the midwest they used Keglined. It will be for awhile that I will able to upgrade this one !!!i Never realized this is one Tough Can !!

Pretty sure the can maker is American (82-A). The THB Co is for the brewing company, sort of trademarking their label. Just because they are close to each other doesn't mean they are related.

Here is the other time someone asked about this can. Looks like Charlie was talking about the St.Paul one. Also, seems like I remember someone mentioning a "From the land of" version from somewhere other than St. Paul at one time. Anyone have one of those?

Ten years ago I said i was going to take pictures of mine and never did. Better late than never. I regularly turn those cans at shows and have not seen one in those ten years. It is a tough can.
