Cap-sealed Continental cans in advertising 1935
So I originally wanted to see if I could update any of the Continental plant listings which Rusty Bunch has a renowned listing of. Before I knew it I found myself down a "Cap-sealed" advertisement rabbit hole and was enjoying what I was finding. Here are all the ads I was able to find on newspapers.com. This doesn't mean that no other cans were advertised, just that these are the ones that were available to me.
Here are a few things I found with the research:
- The news of Continental producing Cap-sealed cans was first noted in Sept 1935 with an expected release date of 1 Oct. There might have been previous discussion on the model and form of the can that was expected to be used but the term "Cap-sealed" was first seen in Sept 1935.
- An ad for Schlitz in "cap-sealed" cans was noted on 1 Oct
- Schlitz just stormed the market on a nation-wide campaign when they became the first to release Schlitz beer in Cap-sealed cans.
- By 31 Oct the next ad for Burger beer in Cap-sealed cans was noted. More were expected to follow based on the success of Schlitz.
- Schlitz continued to spread the good word on the Cap-sealed cans. It was well advertised in the greater northwest.
- By 4 Nov, Old Style was first advertised.
- On 14 Nov, a photo of both Red Lion Ale and Burger were noted.
- On 17 Nov, Kato was first advertised
- December 1935 saw some of the initial rush of other breweries trying to catch onto the wave produced by Schlitz in Cap-sealed cans.
- Duquesne "Keg-o-beer" and Beverwyck beer hit the market in early Dec 1935.
- On 6 Dec, Blatz announced that they would soon be selling both beer and ale in Cap-sealed cans.
- Berghoff in Cap-sealed cans showed up on 12 Dec
- Old Style started to hit the market hard in the greater northwest obviously in competing with Schlitz
- On 20 Dec there was a surprising advertisement for National Ale, National Brewing Co. Maryland in Cap-sealed cans in the Ashville, NC papers.
- By 24 Dec, Blatz in cans finally started showing up in all places Albuquerque, NM
- The Yoopers even got into with Fitger's hitting the great land of Jonny Aho on 27 Dec.
There was plenty more to come in 1936 and 1937 but that is for another time. Here is what was there in 1935......

Re: Cap-sealed Continental cans in advertising 1935
I Noticed the Blatz & Fitger's came along to late in late December to make the December Continental Can Ad. BUT, Then I noticed those 2 were not added to the March 36 Ad. hhmmmm. LEON.

Re: Cap-sealed Continental cans in advertising 1935
So as to not hijack this thread, I answered some of Leon's Goetz Country Club question(s) in another post.

Re: Cap-sealed Continental cans in advertising 1935
@MI-Cans Thanks for moving that topic since it was related to 1936 vice 1936. I do however want to thank @Leon for adding the magazine article since it helps narrow down at least one more can (Red Lion Ale) from 1935 that I could confirm through advertising. My search of Cap-sealed didn't produce the find. I was however unable to find anything posted on the release of the Kato Lager Beer release.
Here is the Red Lion Ale photo. The timeline and photo has been added to the first posting
