What's your next holy grail item?

#1

Post by John H. »

Ok, now that canvention is over (sorry I missed it), what's on the top of your list for your collection for 2020? I don't have just one, but many, and knowing my luck, I'll get none of them, but you'll never know until you try. So, without further adieu, here's what I'll be looking for:

Cans: Regal India Ale (from the Regal Amber brewery of San Francisco)
Either of the 2 metallic Poth's cans
Any English Lad can (flat, cone or quart)
Any Carnegie can (12oz cone or quart cone)

Tap Knobs: Goldenrod
Blue & white Narragansett
Red & white Narragansett
St. Claire
Indian Queen from Hohenadel

Trays: Circular Hohenadel can with a hot dog behind a glass of beer
Cavalier tray for Hop Gold (circular)
Pre Pro Ruppert that's an upright oval tray with an eagle with upswept wings like a "V" on a barrel of beer

And I would really like another Golden West light from Oakland. Gee, that wasn't so painful! Still, I think I've got better chances to win the lottery. Good luck to everybody and I hope you all find something for your collections in the upcoming year!

Excellent question. I look forward to seeing everyone's responses.

There are plenty of cans I would like to get in 2020 but I know some things are very unlikely to happen (Fox DeLuxe OD from Grand Rapids). Instead, here are two cans I would like to find in off grade condition.

Pfeifer dark sailboat
Pfeifer snow skier
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

2023 Shows Attended

* Michigan Chapter Winterfest, January 14, Frankenmuth Michigan
* Cabin Fever Reliever, February 24, Mishawaka Indiana
* Buckeye, March 11, Toledo Ohio
* SummerSwap, July 21 & 22, Frankenmuth Michigan

I want the Glory B can that the guy found. Made a good offer, but he prefers a trade for stuff I don’t have...yet! We shall see what happens. I’m not greedy here, I just had the can before and would like it back now that I’m collecting again...

I rather like a few cans in the up coming auction too, but I better not say which ones just yet.

Kiewel’s and Red Wing too...

I've had a great year. Added at least 2 cans I wasn't sure I'd ever be able to get. Super happy. So for next year I'd like to add a Playmate Malt Liquor. Anything else is gravy.

Sure there are others but I'm trying to be realistic.

Rare and old holy grail:
1. Minty Brown Derby Quart from Salem Brewery Association, Salem, Oregon. they are out there....just keep coming in as the 2nd place bidder when they come up for sale.

Rare, fairly recently produced and searching for for decades in some cases Holy Grails:
1. Colt 45 export to Canada listing Portland and Seattle.
2. Eastside by Blitz-Weinhard, Portland, OR
3. Henry Weinhard's Private Reserve Portland, Oregon, export to Taiwan lid with a London Importer name on the seam and only sold on cruise ships...
4. Brown Derby straight steel by General, Los Angeles.
5. Minty Champagne Velvet, bu Atlantic, Spokane Washington with the red 75th anniversary logo on the label.

2019 has been a good year, picked up 4 cans that may have made this short list, and still some months to go!

Setting aside a Red Cap Ale 16 which is #1 for sure, probably top grail cans

- Minty Golden Gate 16 - either variation
- Minty Red/Gold Champagne Velvet - Red/Gold
- Regal Select softop 16 - Blue color on the Newest....
- 15 oz Schlitz from LA
- Any Miami Natty Boh 16 -
- Krueger Beer - Gumdrop - from Cranston

Oh and a 14oz National or 14oz Draft by National would always be nice!!

Iron City Mountaineer basketball tab
Yeah, I'd to see that one.
I only know of two Mountaineer Football cans - standing and running. Those are the only ones mentioned in this reference I found on Sports Cans by Bruce Remick BCCA #7549. It has 68 pages and only mentions "Mountaineer" on page 18 for College Football.

I'd like to get solid cans- that you can at least tell are Apache and Red Wing cones.

The Apache in the 7 Most Rusted thread looks a lot like one I wish I didn't get rid of.... dooh....

Leon - that is a cool can - is it paper or foil label or real paint - I've not seen it in person. There are a few test 16s I'd like to own for sure - but I'm not sure I venture into paper labels.

This type of info is why I fought the BCCA for years to share non-BCCA publications with the collecting community, instead of locked in some basement. The following is from Brewery Collectibles (Jeff Cameron publication) 1982, Dec/Jan. Pictured are two rare, possibly unique Iron City cans. The first is the 6th NJ scene showing Washington Headquarters discussed last month. The second is the Mountaineers can showing dribbling basketball.
