Meager Rusty Bunch DUMP ????? @ ABQ CANvention....
My brother has received a whopping TWO packages for the Rusty Bunch Dump. I brought back 2 boxes of cans from Scott Field from the South Lake Tahoe Show. How about some support for the show even though you may not be going? Especially those most active here by banging away on the keyboard all the time, how about box up a few dumpers and send them to CMD? Just because the show is not in your backyard, doesn't mean you cant donate some time to box some cans up and send them here for others (fellow members) to enjoy. Otherwise we'll just call it the Scoglietti Bros dump if we get no support from our rusty brothers..... Your cans and efforts will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Rusty Bunch DUMP ????? @ ABQ CANvention....
On one of the threads I inquired about straight steel? Those work? I don’t think I have any 30/40/50’s dumpers.
Interested in all flat and Cone Soda and Water cans.

I will see if anybody from my area is driving out. If so, I can get a box of presentable dumpers together to send along.

I am not anyway involved, other than watching the spectacle at convention, but in past years I know SS tabs were ok, just aluminum is verboten. If I am wrong, someone will correct me I am sure.
It is interesting to see when a quart or gallon is in the pile and how long it lasts before it is snatched up

Here’s a shot of our new banner to honor Dave Van Hine at the RB CANvention dumps going forward. Yes, Niagara Falls is spelled wrong, but was corrected before the banner was printed. This is the only file I have on my iPad.

Re: Rusty Bunch DUMP ????? @ ABQ CANvention....
Again, thanks to all who have sent cans in, and those who are bringing them in by hand, BUT we are on track to having the smallest Rusty Bunch Dump ever! Dave Van Hine would be so proud. This club is made of what you put into it and it's not looking good. How about going thru your garages and putting together a case or so of cans and mailing them out to Dan? My brother Dan has 12 cases of his own cans to bring. I am bringing about 400+ cans in 3 boxes. Right now we'll be lucky to have a 1000 cans in the dump. Take away what Dan and I are tossing in and maybe we have a couple hundred. Does anyone dig cans anymore in the Rusty Bunch? Should we drop "Rusty" from the club name and replace it with something else? Should we just let the tradition die? It's up you....

Re: Meager Rusty Bunch DUMP ????? @ ABQ CANvention....
I will be sending only 1 can, for reasons explained below, but one lucky BCCAer will walk away from the Dave Van Hine Rusty Bunch Dump with an Apache cone top. Not much to look at but the can is solid, no holes and an authentic 1930s souvenir from the deserts of Arizona.
Here's the reason: I gathered together 100 flat tops of dubious value, mostly the usual $1 box variety, put them in a big carton, weight came out to 22 pounds and the shipping cost rang up as $65.21 for basic USPS Retail Ground.
I declined to ship the package. I live in the upper right corner of the USA (Maine) and New Mexico is in Zone 8 (as is most of the country west of the Mississippi River for me). There are better ways to use $65.21 then to pay for shipping.
Even if it was 50 cans at 11 pounds, it would cost $42.32 or almost a dollar per can.
At the Springfield, Mass. Canvention in 2012, I donated about 100 or more cans. I also got 25 cans to add to the collection, so I did get to witness the fun of the event.
Going forward, and this is probably a topic for a future conversation, we may need to adapt the concept of the dump to reflect changes in our collecting patterns.
More collectors are focusing on getting cans in the best possible condition that they can afford. Less numbers of collectors are seeking quantities of low grade common cans just to have an example. They would rather wait it out and get the better examples.
There will always be demand for the rarities and tough variations regardless of condition. However, off grade common cans have little demand, tough to sell, hard to give away and costly to ship as donations.
We have all read the comments from those who dump cans and leave behind or bury the common cans (Oly!) and the collections that are bought with large numbers of cans sent to the scrap yards. I would love to clean out my house of several 100s of 'traders' that take up space and have little or no demand. -Billy.

Re: Meager Rusty Bunch DUMP ????? @ ABQ CANvention....
I also think that planning many months ahead might defer some cost and find someone who could help out. Finding someone in your locale who is going to the show - maybe they could bring a box for you? I brought down 2 boxes of cans from Scott Field that he gave me at the Tahoe show (even though he is driving - I cant figure that one out??) Dan Van Hine used to have a can-meter in each issue of RUSTlings showing the current count of cans for the RB dump. That really got the word out. FedX Ground seems to be the cheapest for me to send cans but not always the case for others. Also when shipping cost seem excessive, sending 6 quality cans would be better then 50 easy dumpers.

I'm bringing a case of flats and SS cans for the dump, not much I know but I guess very little bit helps. Do I take it to the registration desk?

1) I am bringing a lot of stuff and might need the room in my truck. I have about the same amount of space taken up with items I'm bringing for another Portland collector who is flying.
2) It got the pile growing and gave you a better idea of how much stuff you may (or may not) have for the dump.
3) When I get there, I don't have to lug the boxes around the hotel and figure out where they go.
4) The cans are no longer in my garage which outweighs the first three reasons combined.
The luckiest dumpers don't rely on good fortune, the unluckiest do.
