YOU MUST STOP COLLECTING…

#1

Post by MI-Cans »

Now that I have your attention, I had fun with the “Niche” post and I think others enjoyed it also.
Here’s something a little different but it’s more of a “What If” question.

Here’s the scenario…
• You will have to stop collecting immediately.
• There’s a warehouse that has unlimited multiples of every type and piece of Breweriana that ever existed.
• You are allowed to go to that warehouse and select any three individual items of your choosing at no cost.
• What three items would you choose to culminate your collecting career and you would therefore have to be satisfied with it (your collecting career) and those three final items?

For you Wise-Guys out there…
• You can’t just buy or own the warehouse.
• You cannot get all of something that was ever made.
• You can’t say that you’ll never be satisfied.
You can only pick three individual items of your choosing on which to end your collecting career. They can be your “grail” items, maybe something that’s frivolous, maybe something that’s even impossible. It’s your choices.

I will start off with my picks. (It is assumed that all picks would be in mint condition.) If I could walk into a warehouse and put three items in the cart and end my collecting career with a sense of satisfaction, I would grab the following:

1. 1st CANvention can.
2. Primo Hawaii First Aluminum Can
3. Hamm’s Motion Sign.

Anyone care to list your choices…?

My first thought was the 3 toughest cones but never collecting again I will go with:

1. Apache
2. Metallic Glueks LP
3. Red Lion Ale

Since everything will be mint...

1. Travis Pale
2. Travis Dark
3. Time

or

1. Schepps neon
2. Dixie 45 spinner sign
3. Kol by Gulf

or

1. Pre Pro Texas Brewing Company charger sign
2. Black Dallas tin sign
3. Regal neon

I'm not sure three is enough or if I can stop collecting.

Already, I'm doing Google searches for that cobalt blue bottle and some of the other signs mentioned.

This could end up like the "Niche" post. Making folks aware first of your collecting interests and now your ultimate "collectibles". I wonder if anyone has been contacted with someone saying "I saw something you might be interested in."

Mike...that's ONE group of three.

I like this question. Since this question is part of a fantasy world, I thought I might as well go all out.

First, I would like this 1903 Ford which was used as a promotional vehicle by Fox Deluxe in Grand Rapids. This picture was taken on October 26, 1949 in front of the Pantlind Hotel in downtown Grand Rapids. This hotel is now a portion of the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel.

1949-10-26, 1903 Ford in front of Pantiland, 125.c0113125.jpg

Next, I would like the clock that hung outside the Fox Deluxe Brewery in Grand Rapids. The brewery was purchased by Fox Deluxe in December 1940. They officially ceased operations in December 1951 although they stopped brewing beer a month earlier. In addition to the clock, I would like one of the bottles that hung on the side of the building. As you can see, some of the bottles had a flat back while others were a full 360 degrees. I don't want to be overly demanding, so I will accept either style. This picture was taken on September 6, 1947.

Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

1. First Salem Beer label by the Salem Brewery Association, Salem, Oregon. Exist only in the Oregon State Archives.
2. Salem Beer Gillco Cab Light - either of the 2 versions
3. Any of the 3 Lucky "Bug" Flats from Vancouver, Washington. (USBC Vol. I, 94-3/4/5) I have looked at literally 100's of bug flats over the last 30 years and have never seen even a dumper. I have scoured shows, ebay, dealer sites, the Portland Canvention, you name it......Nada. I personally have never seen any proof they exist outside of the USBC book or even if they exist at all. I personally believe they don't exist until I see a picture of the can's mandatory from someone? Anyone? I am tired of looking for these mythical cans.

I'd walk down the Lucky Lager aisle (which is arranged chronologically) until I find the 3 FEB 58 case of cans.

Then I scour the Colorado aisle to see if there's any proof of a Telluride cone.

Lastly, I find a full and cold Pikes Peak Beer and drink it.

Bantam,
Your answer doesn't meet the criteria. The warehouse that has unlimited multiples of every type and piece of Breweriana that ever existed will not have a warehouse in it for you to select. Try again.

Choices are not limited to cans nor a particular catergory. It's asking for three of anything and all three don't have to be the same category. So far, there's bottles, cans, signs, advertising, trays, even a vehicle! Some pretty cool answers so far.

30s style Hornell serving tray - black, white, red - Deco style. I own one currently, but would like an ongrade example for the sheer Deco-ness of it.

Palomar can - because I had a decent example once, and it's among my favorite all-time labels. It would be between this and a gold/black Tru Blu Ale O/I, but honestly, I prefer the colors of the Palomar. No Palomar left in the warehouse? I'll take the Tru Blu.

Goebel Thunderbird. It's metallic copper, it's a Michigan O/I, it's a Goebel, and it's pure badass. As far as I'm concerned, there's really not much to add.

If I was actually forced to go into this warehouse, I would pick up both variations of the white Hillmans OI's and any signage from an obscure pre pro Chicago brewery.

I say forced, because I don't really want to stop collecting right now. I'm having too much fun.

Since the rules haven't forbidden this, I would go in and pick the three highest dollar cans I could find.
Tiger Beer? Gibbons Bock Cone? Kruger Special? I would sell them, and pay off my house for the good of the family. I'd keep my current collection if that wasn't part of "quit collecting", and I'd still follow cans on Facebook, read the RB and hopefully still get to shows.

I need a proper big *** one of a kind sign to advertise my two items inside this building I've created to house my two OTHER items, which are inside. This sign is on a light sensitive timer,so my friends and neighbors know that I'm open.
The attachment tumblr_n6x6eddGo71rpj8w3o1_500.jpg is no longer available
This is the truck parked inside my bar-rage,and it just so happens that it's refrigerated and full of beer.

And (although I can't find the picture of it now) I'd love to own the Imperial beer bubbler light that Gene DiCicco found. Had a burning cigarette and a beer on it. Just a flat out stunner for graphics.

#2 - The sign above Ray's Drivein

I would place them on my roof, light them up and piss off the HOA.

I took some time to reflect on the topic/question. Would I pick something for my Olde Frothingslosh collection? Would I pick something for my Anchor Christmas collection? Would I pick something for my BCCA CANvention items collection?

Then it hit me, look at my avatar to the right.

There is reportedly 6 of those, and I own 2 (see below).

So my choice is 3 more of the silver first year CANvention can. Leaving 1 for someone else.

1) Viking Beer - love the graphics on that can!
2) Kopper Kettle cone - for my Lafayette brewery collection
3) The Marlin White Label I sold a couple years back

But since we're just fantasizing I'd take that Labatt's truck that Barry Travis posted and put the Viking beer back on the shelf. :-)

Since I don't want to stop collecting I'd do my best to avoid the entrance, however if I did enter;

1. Now that we verified the existence of the 12 ounce Calgary Malt Lager, that one is a definite!

2.How many unknown cans will we find [Maybe a Simon Pure Ale or.... you fill in the blank]

3. For me a Nueweiler Bock!

Hey, where's that entrance door again?

Looking for Apache Cone info and found this.... So are Bill Christensen's cans still missing or does anyone know yet what actually happened?

I'd go Adelphi Flat (if its not a sticker but a real beer can)- alt is Apache Cone (I would really like to get one without holes and at least partially readable in real life).

I would avoid this warehouse like it was the plague until I acquired the six very obtainable -J-Spouts I need, then I would run over and grab a blue Hudepohl and a Gretz Bock. Assuming no additional as-yet-undiscovered J's are to be had, I would grab an Ortlieb's Bock Ale to upgrade the hideously reconstructed one I have now.

I would head to the Narragansett section and pick some stuff out. If you have been to the Therbridge's house in RI (probably spelled wrong) their Narragansett and RI collection IS THE WAREHOUSE! They have 2 of the 3 stained glass pieces that were embedded in the front of the actual brewery. Both 1 of a kind. I would probably pick:
1) a random Narragansett sigh that caught my eye (There are many)
2) A Narragansett Quart (Mint)
3) THE Krueger Special (yep, just incase I needed retirement money later)
