I thought the Lewandowski's paid to Much for that Autocrat when I seen them get it off ebay for $4,500. Then last year was that Autocrat on ebay that only got around $1,500. Who or why would anyone pay $10,000 for there dumper? $7,500 sounds like alot for a faded Pink Miller O/I just because it's Withdrawnfree. Could I get $7,500 for my only known Altes Crowntainer? NOT. They did not dicker on the prices either. They sold at the right time. If you didnt want to pay that price, there were 3 or 4 others who would.

October of 2002. Thanks for posting the list. I've wanted to review that for some time. I still have a few cans from those heady days. That was a fun moment.

Actually the twins did knock off a chunk from the last couple of cans I purchased, which was quite nice of them. My cans ranged from the good to the bad to the ugly, but I'm still happy with some of the cans obtained.

I would like to have a crack at either an Edel Brau or Edel Brew in the 6k range again....

I miss these guys!!

Michael L. was always very kind to me when I got back
into collecting in the late 90's and answered every one of
my questions no matter how stupid they may have been
back then....He even opened up his home for a view of there
collection which included Dan B. ,myself and CMD as our host
-----ahhhh--fond memories!!!

Since we were fellow Pabst collectors we hit it off. There were
only 2 cans I had that the twins wanted---yup--both Pabst.

1) One was a gr 1 long opener(from my indoor find) and the only
reason they wanted it was that it was a top lid var. they did not
have(full old time alcholic strength) and these guys at the time
had the best of the best Pabst collection. If you have a ongrade
early Pabst OI(not all long openers) w/that lid it probably came
from my find and there was also a Kansas find as welll.

2) Pabst Export L-645. & usbc #111-10(pic of there can) and at
the time is was the 3rd best known example(gr1-) and even thou
I was offered a great trade---I just couldnt do it as I like the Pabst
cans just like the twins did!!

Some one should tell the story of the Lew Bros. collection when they
lived at there parents house and had to view there collection thru a
crawl space.etc...........

Later--Brent

WOW! 5 and 4 figure prices for ROLLED CANS? And if they didn't sell for that, I'll bet they were damn close! What were people thinking?

So Ed, since you posted this list (thanks by the way) givin' your stance on rolled cans, at what point do cans that ain't real and suck become worth those prices? When there is only one or two known? Also, who wound up with the Waldorf Golden Bock "frankenstein can?"

WF cans

#10

Post by beercanman »

fcf,

That's a good question. I like WF cans but don't consider mine to be one of the top notch collections. I wonder who the other WF guys even are. You'd think that I would know that but I really have no idea who the other specialists are in that area. Lew Bros got out and Ed K was an OD guy. I like the OD and non-OD WFs. Anyway, I have a feeling that a lot of the high dollar WFs just went into separate collections and might not come together again. I'll get a pic of my WFs (flats only) posted sometime. If anyone's got something that I don't have and they want to move it - contact me.

FCF - just my opinion - I dont like rolled cans although I do have a few. I hate them so much that I will remove a mint rolled can off the shelf for a lower grade original beer can.

Cant understand how the Lew Bros just totally melted down and got out of collecting cans all together. Lots of guys have (started) families but still collect cans. Seems to me collecting is in the blood. Oh well.....

I can't help with who has the most WF cans, but I can help with one of the Lewandowski's WF cans. I picked up the Goebel 70-34 WF from them. I know there are a few rub out examples of this can around. Anyone have an idea how many are out there? Are there any more non rub out examples?

Chuck,

Great can! I've got one of those that was partially rubbed out from a Drewry's can - compliments of our very own Longopener (thanks!).

If you ever upgrade that can please keep me in mind for the downgrade.

I have got one of those Withdrrawn free Goebels that needs to be rubbed out. I got the can from Dave Wheaton, but never attempted to rub it out. The can has minor dent ruffling which I think makes rubbing out that much more difficult. Anybody good at rubbing out cans????

Most, but not all, of the Lewandowski cans sold from this offering. A few did not sell, and made their way to ebay, such as the Rheingold OI. I suspect that they may have made other deals with people who were purchasing multiple cans, and this price list may not EXACTLY reflect the true prices the cans sold for in all instances.

Beercanman may recall that PON withdrawn free can listed for 4000. I believe it now resides with him?
I picked that up for a fraction of the price and passed it along to Steve for another fraction o' the price.

I'm not a big fan of rolled cans either, but I have one significant can on my shelf that's rolled. It's quite easy to imagine certain labels as rolled cans bringing 4 or 5 figures, especially if they're well put together.

Thats easy, they probably had everything that was worthwhile to get and were smart enough to know when the prices were at their peak in the hobby....in other words they made a killing! With that said im suprised they didnt keep a certain small group of cans like their pabst, WF or a certain city or state just to remain connected to the hobby..

A few years after the sale, the Twins started reducing the prices....I bought 5 or 6 cans off that list that were originally priced at $1000 each but I didn't pay nearly that much for a piece for them...

The twins still like to know what's going on in the hobby - I keep in touch with both, especially Mike. He's got a couple of dayghters now and is putting the same effort into family life that he did with beer cans for so long. There was some talk initially about Dave maybe keeping the WF cans and continuing to collect, but how do you equitably split a collection like theirs? I wouldn't be completely surprised to see one or both get back in, but what would you collect once you've had almost everything?

As Brent said, I miss the guys in the hobby. Dave and I hit it off immediately when we met at Blue/Grey. Subsequently, my job had me traveling to Belvidere, IL (near Rockford) for the better part of a year and a half to work on the launch of the 2000 Neon. I'd go out there for two weeks, come home for a long weekend, and head back out there. I got to see their collection perhaps 50 times, including a number of times while it was still displayed in the crawlspace of their parents' house. You had to climb up on the clothes dryer and through a 4' by 4' hole in the wall to get in there. The ceiling in there was not much more than 4' high, so you could either sit down or crawl around on your hands and knees to look at the cans. The crawlspace was huge - they had about 6000 cans on shelves in there. It was surreal to say the least!

Some other comments, based on some of the things that have been said previously in the thread:

Pricing in general - Sure, there are some very big numbers. But bear in mind that the twins, as with any specialist who becomes well known, walked around with a target on their back for years. They got the cans they wanted, but they often paid a huge premium to do so. When it came time to sell, it's like with a dealer who purchases a large collection for huge money - you mark the better stuff high because you don't really know going in which cans are going to be the ones that sell quickly so that you get your money back. The twins put out several iterations of their list over the span of a couple years, with prices dropping on the remaining cans each time. They also put a number of cans on ebay with no reserve later. A few cans that I recall going this route were the rolled Old Dutch at $2600 (later for sale again at $6500), the Apollo for about $125 and the Hornung's Ale at about $75. So, they lost over $5000 on those three cans alone.

Autocrat - It seemed cheap to me at the price they paid. And they were offered double their money on it before it had even arrived in the mail! It is not an outdoor can. It's an indoor can with substantial humidity spotting; perhaps a barn or basement find.

WF cans - Pricing seemed quite high on these, especially the OI's, but the majority sold very quickly. I have no idea who has the leading WF collection now. I don't know as though anybody is pursuing them as the twins did, where the goal was to get every one of them. Many of their cans went to specialists for particular areas or can types. Leon - what you need is a brain surgeon who collects minor variations on Crowntainers.

Dickering on price - If there were 3 or 4 others lined up willing to pay the list price, why would they drop their price? I had become good friends with the guys and only paid full price for one can; a cheap one as this list goes....I didn't even have to ask for a break on the cans I asked about. But, I'm sure that people reaped what they had sown in that regard.

Rolled cans - I doubt if anybody out there loves them. But when you're talking about cans with 2 or 3 known examples in high grade, a rolled can may bring huge money. I personally only have one rolled can and wouldn't pay more than 1/3 to 1/2 of the value of an original can. It's the tougher variation of the Kamm's J-spout, and as far as I know two high grade examples are the only known all-original cans. Three flat sheets turned up, so I snagged one at what I thought was a fair price and had it assembled using lids from a donor can. I would replace it with a dumper if I had the chance.

Waldorf Frankenbock - I forget now who bought it initially, but it ended up with Jim Romine.

I felt or got the Impression some of the overpriced O/I's were targeted to one particular collector. I think we all know who that is. LEON.

Hey Marc - you paint the twins as saints. I liked them alot too but when it came time to sell - it was like I wasn't even their buddy anymore. A can I sold to them for $400, they turned around and sold for $7000. They made big money on a few other cans they got from me. Sour grapes, no because I did get what I wanted from them in trade. But when I asked for a price break on a group of cans and the answer was no. I guess business is business.

BTW - Dale had an awesome collection built by dumping and sold it. But he got back into cans again as well as a bunch of guys who did the same too. I dont see what the big hang up would be to start collecting again??? So what - they had almost everything.....

Ed - I tried to present an impartial posting of my thoughts and knowledge of the twins and the sale of their cans. But the fact is, they were always generous with me and went well out of their way to help me build my collection. I tried to return the favor, but it wasn't often that I was actually able to do so. There weren't many cans that they needed, and they knew a lot more people than I did. I can't really speak to your experiences with them. Not bending on price could have been a simple matter of which cans you picked, or there could have been more to it. I just don't know.

They've only been out of the hobby for five years; I wouldn't be surprised if one or both got back in at some point.

Woody - The collection is a mess right now. I pulled down and sold roughly 25 cans to go after a few gems from the McCoy collection, so I've got holes all over the place. I've got photos from a couple of years ago at work; I'll bring those home and post them this week.

Wow, what a sight to see all of those cans being sold off. Must have been painful for them. One certainly can get attached to his collection.

Must get out before I get trapped in the

I'm more of your 1 figure guy LOL.

Great cans on that list though!
