Morean Auction

Post by ConeAddict »

Holy Crap! I wonder what the total $'s are from that auction? There was a string around the Tally Ho Ale where there seemed to be about 10 cans in a row going for $2000+. Speaking of the rolled Tally Ho Ale I think it went for $6500 pre buyers premium, pretty comparable can to the Kuebler Bock that I think went for 30K+, Dan was really trying to get more bids. An Apache, a Clipper cone, a Gunthers OI, Red Lion, I could go on and on listing the holy grails in this one. A Purple Cow tab $4200! Apache gets $14.5K.

For the cans I know or was interested in the National Ale FBIR went for $1350, that is a pretty good price for one of them since I have been back in collecting. A minty one went for 11K a few auctions ago. I bid at the end but finished second, really wanted it but I already had a leading bid on the Mews Ale cone that I thought might win and it did, couldn't afford two cans on that price level. Happy to get the Mews, no idea how to value those tough foreign cans but that would look great on any shelf.

I don't know how to value the foreign cones either, but I'd like to get the woodgrain "Beer" sample can and the Coronation Brew someday. Not today, though. I was all done less than 15 minutes into live bidding today. A few things did go surprisingly high, but I think there were quite a few buyer-friendly results too. It's interesting how some big cans got little action prior to the live bidding and others had already exceeded expectations a week or two ago. It's a lot of fun to watch the live session, that's for sure.

I think from the BCCA mag article on those cans last year that the Coronation is a lot tougher than the Mews but like you say it's hard to say what you should pay for them, so many collectors focus on US cans. I bid on the Coronation first this morning but didn't lead and moved on to the Mews which I like better anyway.

Agree on the weird bidding trends, the Gunther and a few others were already pretty much maxed out this morning yet I hung around for the Tally Ho cans just because I didn't want to miss a deal but they were way out of my league in the end.

My interest in the Coronation Brew is based more on the fact of a coronation and a beer can to commemorate it than on the aesthetics of the can itself. The Mew's is definitely more attractive. I'd actually like to collect all the 9 2/3 oz. cones, but the last thing I need is another distraction.

I thought there were a number of buyer-friendly prices, with the red Black Label Bock and the insanely clean Croft Cream Ale OI at the top of the list. I expected the Waldorf and the tough Fox Deluxe variation to do better also, even with the latter being re-lidded. It seemed that fewer cans went way higher than expected than in Dan's previous auctions also. A lot of the better cans seemed to go right about where they should. The Bel-Aire was a big surprise for me, but I don't know cans from that era as well as the older cans. I had no real idea what to expect from the Clipper, but I did expect fierce bidding. I've referred to that can as "the most common $20,000+ can in the hobby" here in the past because I know there are at least a dozen grade 1 or better, but they never come up for sale.

Thanks, Tom. I knew the Beer was obtainable, but I was unaware of the variation and the Ale.

Yeah, I don't know what to say about those except that it seems like each one that comes up sells for more than the last one. Better tabs don't seem to have found their ceiling yet.

Here you go. You should get on Dan's mailing list; it looks like he's going to be doing this regularly.

His auctions are doing extremely well and I see major expansion in the near future.
After holding and almost drooling on the Clipper I was standing tall on my bid but then the sad face hit. I never thought it would go quite that high sooooo I now need to dig one and have a few extra Captain and cokes tonight. :smt010

hmmmmmm, Thanks for Link, Interesting results, some seem fair & some seem way to high. Just like ebay? I thought Wally's Apache was much nicer shape. I bought a mint Apache cap for the day I thought I'd buy Wally's Apache for $3,500 way back in mid to late 1990's but Wally was to hesitant to sell back then. Oddly or Coincedently I then sold the Cap to the guy that did buy it. So cap went where I wanted it to go anyways. I thought it sold for $25k back then but could be wrong. LEON.

I've probably seen 3 or 4 nice Mews & 3-4 Coronations, maybe more & some of them offgrade. I bought my Mews for $900 many years ago & then sold it for $1,200 later & that's about what I've seen the others get then & now. Same with Coronations but just my opinion & observation, I'm no foreign cone expert. I did notice the TALLY HO Ale cone description said one of 2 known. Seems like I've seen at least 3 or more indoor unless i'm seeing the same ones over & over again which is possible. And description must mean clean indoor cans since I know of at least 6 or more dumpers, at least 4 of those dumpers came from under a Barn Floor in New York. I think KB ended up getting one of those. LEON.

The format is a bit weird when there isn't a true live auction in conjunction with the online bidding, as the live auction takes place online only. Absentee bidding ended at 11:00 AM and the live auction began at noon, with each item coming up for a final round of action. I assume you thought the whole thing was over at 11:00 AM?

Wally's Apache sold for $20K, it was his Clipper that brought $25K.

OK.....just to show how much of an outlier I am, I thought $200 for the Hopfheiser was low. Yea....I know....terrible condition.....but they all are except for one I think, and so I would figure the other 4 or 5 in existence would bring a little more if just to have it save that place on the shelf.....and give bragging rights to be able to own something that rare. Yep....I agree.....my opinions on off grade OIs are pretty skewed. :-)

If I knew the Hopfheiser was going to go that low I would of bid on it just to park it next to my Regal, Then I'd just need the Triangle to complete the 3 Toughest &/or most desireable O/I's in my opinion. LEON.

Not an outlier at all Rand, the poor condition Hopfheisers have sold and traded for twice that and more. It probably would have done better in an auction that included more dumpers. There were persistent rumors of an indoor can existing before the two we know of turned up, but I don't believe it's been confirmed.

Thanks for the info on the Mew's, sounds like I paid about the usual market price. I was wondering about the Tally Ho Ale scarcity, I guess it is not comparable to the rolled Kuebler Bock J which I think was unique or only 2 known.

There are a decent number of Kuebler Bock dumpers out there, including a couple up around grade 2, but only the one indoor example has surfaced thus far.

Dave Launt dumped at least one nice Tally-Ho Ale decades ago, possibly two.

Good memory, Clarkston1. I remember that thread and the display cases, but I didn't remember the cans to connect it to the auction.

Brown Super S at $3,700

My two biggest surprises. But again, what do I know?
The Cow price was high, but the Super S was about right in my opinion. The Renaee for $2500 and Old Mil saloon doors for $690 were both too low. I haven't seen a Thrifty go over over $1000 in a long time.
