2 different 1988 Harley Davidson Beer Cans Question

#1

Post by zoinkss »

I have been told the 1988 first printing of the Harley Davidson beer can which has the same design as the 1987 Harley can is a bit rare. I am curious how rare if at all. Most collections I have picked up have harley cans. I never see the 1st version of the 1988 can but always the Gold 2nd version.
Today, I got a collection with 3 of the 1988 1st silver version. On ebay all the past sales are the gold version.
Just curious how rare if at all. Anyone?

The 1988 silver should have been gold but there was a mix up. Most of the '88 silver were destroyed once the error was noticed, however some got out. This is the rarest of the H.D. although not that expensive. Back in the '90s, they fetched $20-25, not so much today.

I know that this thread was mostly about the aluminum cans from the 80's, but in general, wouldn't the 5L Harley Davidson cans be more expensive/valued more now, especially if the 12 oz can values have decreased?

Bit of a side note on Harley Davidson can values. There is a class of folks out there that are completely delusional on values....simply because it says Harley on it. The one I've been tracking is a guy that has a Harley Davidson beer can radio. Most beer can radios typically go for $50ish max....but this guy thinks his is worth $222. He's not coming off that price either. Just bringing it up because there are some rabid Harley guys out there that place a premium on this stuff.

I keep track of a few places as well who sell the Harley cans in Milwaukee. I get them in every collection. They still sell for anywhere from $1 to $20 but have an average of about $5 at resell stores during Harley fests and such. A lot of stores ask me for a few packs in the spring and sell them throughout the summer and fall.
The silver 1988 though is particularly asked for as I have still seen it go upwards of $20 each so that guys can complete sets.
I have never known exactly how rare it was so I thought I would ask here.
I also tried to do a RB forum search and nothing was found. Figured I would set the record straight at just how rare.
Just a note that in the last 10 years of looking since I found out, I have found only 1 previously until now.

I picked up the Silver 1988 Harley can as part of a set on eBay. Think I paid about $5 for it. It was certainly the toughest to track down.

I have a silver and a gold 1988, both from Jos. huber. My silver 88 has some smoke staining though.

Most sellers on ebay don't know the difference and put a $5 price on it when it does pop up. Most collectors think they have all of them because they don't know its out there until they see one or read about it.
