Creme Top OI's

#1

Post by MarkfromIndy »

Latest Rustlings reiterated that there were 1100 or so Creme Top's found in New Mexico once upon a time. If this is so, where exactly did they go? I've seen maybe 5 in person and 10 in auctions and don't know but a couple collectors who have one.

The one I just waa watching on Ebay went for like $15, so I don't think I can kill the market much more.

Where are they all?

I'm with you Mark. I used to see them at every show... but not so much any more... Or I have become immune to them... For my first 25 years in the BCCA I was only looking for Colorado cans... Now, after parting ways with that part of my collection, I am finding "new" cans of interest... It's like a rebirth.. kinda.

I traded for one back at the '83 Canvention in Houston. They were hot commodities at that time.

Jim Plant I think bought at least 100 of them from the guy who dug them. I saw about 4 cases at my first blue/grey around 1993 and traded for one if I remember right. I guess all the active collectors got one then and have never upgraded since.

That 1100 can find had to be the early 1980s but I never saw it. I only heard about it. It had to be after the Lew Cady Beer Can Collecting (2nd edition) book came out, because it there, it was listed as one of the rarest 24 cans known. Still a very rare can in on-grade condition. When was the last time you ever saw a mint one? A good dumper is like a Propeller can, you can get $100 all day long for them - doesnt matter how many of them are out there - they're cool looking.

I remember going to the Cedar Rapids Iowa canvention in the early 80’s and there were a lot of cream tops there.

Generations of would be artists armed with green paint or marker have attacked those Creme Top OI's ever since that find. The temptation is irresistible for many.

Funny thing is the first set of cans I bought after getting back into the hobby in 1989 had a Grade 1ish Creme Top that a guy found in a wall in Mattoon, IL and I thought I had an uber rare can because of the Cady book. Only learned years later that they found an Adobi house built with them. Never got another one to replace it.

Awesome Cans!!! Was it you that pulled up the floorboards, so cool? :smt023 :smt023 :smt023
I was contemplating bidding on below one that was on eBay but the 'snot' on the beer glass is what held me back; otherwise, nice looking can and appears that someone got a good deal at $150!

The final chapter of this saga happened a few years ago. Ed Bilodeau who made the find in New Mexico called me. He wanted to know what Cream Tops were selling for. Apparently he never kept one for himself. 😂

Wasn’t there a similar situation with a wind tunnel find in California and the cans rarely show up for sale despite lots being found?

Ed Bilodeau sold all his cans to me about 25 years ago. I recall it was Christmas Eve. Among this can collection were the remnants of his New Mexico Cream Top find. Many were dented or crushed as well as sun damaged. I don't recall the number but probably 40-60 were collection worthy. I saved the nicest one and still have it. I gave the second best to RB for a raffle way back when. The others have all disappeared into collections or ebayed in the late 90s and a number of them ended up in my personal dump. Yes, I have a personal dump. Raisner, Rhodes and Powell would come by the house and dump in it.

In addition to the Cream Tops, Ed had hundreds of variations of Beckers Best cans, Sheridans, Great Falls, Jubilees, Uintas, Fishers, Brew 66, Highlanders and other Montana, Wyoming and Utah dump cans. He lived in that area for many years and would have gone to regional shows. Then moved to NC where I met him. I visited his place several times. He had extensive collections of 50's vinyl records, non sport trading cards, cigarette packs, waxed milk cartons, salt and pepper shakers, matchbooks, cook books and soda cans. I have his soda cans still on the shelf.
