Re: What The Heck Is This?
It looks like a Gotham Quart Cone. Obvious to some it's just another Ditto type can. Not so obvious to others. LEON.

No....I don't take specific situations and apply them whole scale. Not a good plan in life.
But if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck....it IS most likely a duck.

Re: What The Heck Is This?
So, if this is a fake fan why wouldn’t those who know report seller to eBay?

Re: What The Heck Is This?
This has been going on for years & If I remember right Ditto was reported to ebay , ect, ect. But nothing was ever done. Buyer Beware. I'm just amazed at all the people that bid big money on these thinking they are real, or know they are not real but still bid big money like they are real. LEON.

Re: What The Heck Is This?
I sent a question asking if it was a all metal can or a metal can with some sort of wrap over it....
the answer: Hello. I picked up this can at a show last year. It is a steel can and is painted. The steel in the pictures shows a bit of rust wear but its very strong bodied all over. Have a great day.

Wrong fonts, poorly proofread, orange peel finish, garbage on a fishhook.

Re: What The Heck Is This?
Sadly these fakes have gotten more sophisticated, so none of these sellers have a leg to stand on like when they used to say they're just novelty items.
That's kind of a tough question to truly answer how you know a ditto can is what it is. Sometimes there's a snakeskin finish. Sometimes the fonts are wrong. Sometimes the mandatory information or other details are wrong. Sometimes the overall style gives it away. Sometimes the fonts are skewed and wavy from the transfer of a 2d digital photo of a round can onto a flat surface when the dye is printed. Sometimes the can body is wrong, or oddly rusted under the paint. Sometimes it's clearly just silly (whatever happened to Monke Beer? ;-). Sometimes the brewery or brand was fictional. Usually the sales pitch is too flippant.
We could probably make a long list of these, any pair of which probably tells you all you need to know. Our brains just learn how to evaluate this calculus without consciously sifting through it all.
There are some coin and stamp fakes that become valuable because of the story about how they were faked. I hate to think any of this stuff would survive a single estate cleanout but, hey, capitalism.

Re: What The Heck Is This?
I don't know cone tops that well....was there ever a "Gotham" quart? If so, it's not in the USBC. I'm guessing that this is just a poor attempt to copy the 12oz?

Re: What The Heck Is This?
I think it actually looks pretty good for what it is - an obvious fake. It is an attractive can even if the fonts and everything else are all wrong. If that brand was in my collecting wheelhouse I'd consider buying it as a fantasy piece for about $5. Somebody put a lot of work into it.
One has to wonder if people are just messing with the seller and running the price up. It's sad to think there might be people willing to actually spend that much on a beer can who lack even a basic education on the subject. If somebody put on ebay a 1938 bronze penny with Warren Harding on the face that was struck at the Akron mint, would coin collectors bid on it?

I always fear that someone buys something like this for their beer can collecting friend/father/uncle/brother who loves Ohio quarts. Then the gift is given and....................

Re: What The Heck Is This?
He told me it was “appeared” to be all original with no paint or touch up. There was a reserve on it when it opened at 199.99. I bid exactly that knowing that it couldn’t reach the reserve with the first bid and I would not get stuck with it. The reserve was met at least by $20 over the opening bid. BIG RED FLAG for me. If it was real it would have a reserve around 1K. Seller claims to be a bottle collector and not know about cans. All his actions lead me to think he is purposely misleading everyone to scam $$$. As for how many people don’t know it is fake is MANY. I have had SEVERAL can collectors contact me asking about it. Not everyone has the same level of knowledge we do here on the RB......The Brad Meister wrote: ↑Mon Feb 04, 2019 11:14 pm I sent a question asking if it was a all metal can or a metal can with some sort of wrap over it....

I have a Ditto can that was given to me for Xmas many years ago. Kept it when I sold everything but what was given to me. Never told them it was a fake and never will. Something about the thought. Don't know what she paid but hope it wasn't much.

Re: What The Heck Is This?
Years ago when all this started some said it would never be a problem in this hobby and anyone who buys them is an idiot. Things like this is what will drive away new and novice collectors. Nothing like being called an idiot after you spend hundreds on a can for your new collection.

Re: What The Heck Is This?
Seller has now added this language to the auction:
NOTE: I am not an expert on beer cans I collect bottles. I have had many questions on this can most of them on if the can was repainted or a clear coat put on it. A very few have told me this can is not totally authentic to a small or large degree so I want everyone to know comments good and bad I am hearing. Thanks and have a good day.
Sounds like the seller is at least trying to do the right thing. Wonder if whomever has the current bid of $510 will retract it?
BTW, being the OhioCanGuy and all... IMHO, the can is as fake as a $3.00 bill.

Re: What The Heck Is This?
Eh, while the "snakeskin" paint peel is a clear giveaway to anyone mildly educated about cans, I think the Ditto can problem is going to get worse. I bought a "Tiger Beer" from Manhattan replica can off Ebay last year as a novelty item and it has a perfect finish and is very realistic except for the lids. I suspect eventually we will have some slick frauds that even some of us can't see past.

Re: What The Heck Is This?
After he updated Auction with new info of possibly fake he still got a bid of $500 by someone with higher feedback. I always figure some one with a higher feedback & been around awhile would know enough not to bid on this fake phoney, but No, Even high feedback people can be stupid people. LEON.
