Update 2 - No Opener Needed 1962-1963
Just thought to do a quick layout of ads as they appeared for the new concept of zip tops or as Utica Club liked to call them “Poppit." As well-known, Iron City took the lead at getting out the first zip top cans. They made the scene late in 1962. Rheingold had to get their marketing effort out there with the infamous “Chug-a-mug. As the next year started, Busch was quick to come out early in 1963. Then, of course, Schlitz felt they needed to get their "Pop-Top" out and had the audacity to say they had the "world's first self-opening can" in February 1963. Black Label came out with a barrage of ads starting in April 1963. Falstaff came out with zip tops, but you couldn’t tell that in their ads through all 1963. Every ad had an image of a Falstaff can with a flat top. Ortleibs, Duquesne and Rainer also came on to the scene in April 1963. Tavern Pale showed up in May 1963, and as summer kicked off, many breweries decided to join the scene with their beer can including Genesee, Utica Club, and Blitz Weinhard. Rainer wanted to prove that even a sweet little old lady could open up their beer cans. By fall of 1963, the zip top seemed to be the next best thing, so even Hamms, Drewrys, Pabst and Schmidt’s decided to give them a chance. As the year of the new “zip top” came to an end, Duquesne even had given it a go with the "lift-top" bottle.
These were all the ads I was able to find from 1962-1963. By the time 1964 rolled around, many other breweries joined in on the new phenomenon.

Re: No Opener Needed 1962-1963
Awesome post! Archive worthy. This will really help me date cans to the month as I’m dumping in 2019.
Also, it’s worth noting that schlitz had a pull tab bottle cap on their glass cans in the mid 60’s sometime.

Re: No Opener Needed 1962-1963
In early July 1962 Iron City first wanted to name there can the Zip Top but it was persuaded not to since another company (Dow Chemical) was using the name, So it had to settle for snap top. LEON.

Re: No Opener Needed 1962-1963
UPDATE: My original search was for "No Opener Needed". With the search of "zip top" I added a few more cans...
Schoenling, Ruppert Knickerbocker, Strohs, Schmidt, Lucky, and Crown Darby
Here are a few articles. Interesting that the additional cost was 9 cents per can. Also seems Florida had no interest in the new tops but they must have changed that thought since Colt 45, Tropical, Orbit and Spearman were all eventually made with zip-tops...

Re: Update - No Opener Needed 1962-1963
Keith, great information! According to the article, the extra cost of the zip tops was 9 cents per case, not per can. It also states Florida consumers were not paying extra for the new tops like other places were. Interesting that the Iron City ad lists the brewery as Iron City and not Pittsburgh. Were they hiding their name in case it flopped?
Always looking for West Virginia breweriana from Fesenmeier and Parkersburg.

Thanks for sharing! What a great look back at history. It must have been considered a great marketing achievement to have "self opening" cans. I wonder if the average consumer got excited by the NEW technology? I would think they did!

Here's a sign introducing Spearman's entrance into the fray... I'm not sure when this sign was produced, but Spearman went out of business in 1964.

Why drive 12 hour one way to dig Pre-Tax Tru Blu ales, Genny 12 Horse Longopeners, Gamecock Ales, Apollos, Neuweilers Bock, and Krueger’s Baldies when you can locally drive 10 hours round trip and dig Pfeiffer, Goebel, Drewrys and Strohs?

Re: Update - No Opener Needed 1962-1963
I have a question on the orientation of the tab part of the zip top cans. In these 2 ads, the tabs are oriented in-line with the rest of the scored part while in other advertisements, the tab is affixed at the more common angle. I guess the CV could be a mock up but the Busch looks like an actual photo of a can.
Does anyone have examples of zip tops with the tab aligned straight as opposed to at an angle from the opening? The Busch is dated Jan 30, 1963 and the Champagne Velvet is dated July 1, 1963.

Re: Update - No Opener Needed 1962-1963
Got one example of an inline tab - Old Milwaukee from October of 1964. The second image is an ad by Alcoa showing the offset of the tab to the opening. It was produced by Alcoa so I would think they'd show it in its then correct position at that time.
The tab is two pieces. The tab portion is riveted to the scored portion of the lid. If the rivet wasn't tight enough, the tab could be rotated around the lid. This could be possible in later runs as more companies were making their own lids. I think Alcoa had the manufacturing locked up under patent for the first two iterations of zip top lids. The third iteration is when everybody was doing their own customizing.
Just thinking out loud.

I looked through all of my dumper intact zip cans but I don’t have any without the open instructions on the lid (Lift Tab & Pull). All of those are designed to be off angle based on the placement of the instructions imprinted in the lid. I have never seen a dumper with a tab inline with the opening.

Re: Update - No Opener Needed 1962-1963
In my Zip Tab Summary, I concluded that the first two iterations of Zip Tabs were controlled by the Patent holder, Alcoa and the inventor, Ermal Fraze. I based this on the clipping(s) provided by Leon where it stated that Fraze’s tool shop provided $80,000 machines to 40 different manufacturers for the production of these Zip Tops. That’s why I believe that the first iteration was the plain lid and the second was identical with the instructional words added.
That uniformity makes sense in that all the equipment was identical and probably under control of the licensing agreement at that time. It wasn’t until the third iteration when quite possibly the agreement was “loosened” to allow the customization we see from the different brewers.
Another consideration. Advertising has certain freedoms to embellish or modify their handiwork. It’s possible that the graphic work was intended to show the tab but not necessarily in the correct position. A couple examples: the Hamms all aluminum can with “SEAMLESS” printed on the side of the can or the Ortlieb’s can that appears to have “ZIP TOP” embossed on the lid. No one’s ever produced a live example of either one.
My $0.02.

To Leon's comment about this being the thread of the year... could be the "honor" is a bit like "first out of the gate" … or, given this was started Dec 28 2018, the thread made an amazing coming from out nowhere photo finish?

I looked through all of my dumper intact zip cans but I don’t have any without the open instructions on the lid (Lift Tab & Pull). All of those are designed to be off angle based on the placement of the instructions imprinted in the lid. I have never seen a dumper with a tab inline with the opening.

Here's a couple dumper first gen Zips without the opening instructions, both angled.

Re: Update - No Opener Needed 1962-1963
Great Post Keith,
I did read (somewhere) that both Moosehead and Oland Breweries introduced pull tops in late 64.
Here's a box with advertising that refers to the "Zip open" cans being available in Canada, I'm not sure what the "greater convenience" was, this brand has never been reported as a flat top.Mark (expired) wrote: ↑Sun Dec 30, 2018 10:18 am Thanks for sharing - I wonder if the Canadians can claim the first non-US zip top can?

Re: Update - No Opener Needed 1962-1963
Ok....so my initial search was focused on "no opener needed" and zip-top. I stayed within 1963 but spread my search of key words such as "snap tab (this however seemed to be mainly associated with dress shirts)", "self-opening", "easy open (this seems to be the most used term for soft top punch tops....expect a follow-on thread), "flip-top", "pop-top" and "pull-top". These were a direct result of those 1963 ads.
